Análisis de rendimiento de redes en malla inalámbricas basadasen WiMAX utilizando un modelo de colas M/D/1Publicada el 28/01/2014

2014. International Journal of Wireless and Mobile Computing (IJWMC). Wireless mesh networking is aneffective approach to reaching high performance in the last-mile of broadband internet access. The meshstructure is the basic step towards providing cost-effective, dynamic, and high-bandwidth wireless connection.In this paper, WiMAX-like wireless mesh network is considered, with an emphasis on the grid arrangementwhich is the general topology described in the literature. To evaluate the performance of the conventional andproposed scheduling algorithms, each link is modelled using an M/D/1 queue, and a Virtual Node concept isintroduced to describe comparable performance metrics for the system.

2014. Ad Hoc Networks. One of the important features of the cognitiveradio engine is to adapt the parameters of radio to fulfill certain objectivesin a time varying wireless environment. In order to achieve this adaptation,six evolutionary algorithms are employed for optimizing the predefinedfitness functions in the radio environment. The performance of geneticalgorithm, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, bacterialforaging optimization, artificial bee colony optimization and cat swarmoptimization algorithm in different modes of operation are studied in detail.

2014. Optics Communications. A simple all-optical binary phase-codedultra-wideband (UWB) signal generation scheme only using a DWDM-based multi-channel optical frequency discriminator is proposed anddemonstrated. In the proposed scheme, the CW lights emitted from a laserarray are modulated in a phase modulator driven by electrical Gaussianpulses, and then are sent to a DWDM used as a multi-channel opticalfrequency discriminator, in which phase modulation to intensity modulation(PM–IM) conversions are performed, and by locating the phase-modulatedlight wavelengths at the positive or negative slopes of the DWDMtransmission spectra, delaying and recombining each channel signal,binary phase-coded UWB codes are generated.

These silicon 'neurons' could recognizehandwritten numbers, or distinguish plant species based on their flowers. Instead, both work at the same time to sell the baked goods.Similarly, computer programs are more efficient if they process data inparallel rather than to calculate them one after the other. Personal Health Records (PHRs) should remain the lifelong property of patients, who should be able to showthem conveniently and securely to selected caregivers and institutions. In this paper, we presentMyPHRMachines, a cloud-based PHR system taking a radically new architectural solution to health recordportability. In MyPHRMachines, health-related data and the application software to view and/or analyze it areseparately deployed in the PHR system. After uploading their medical data to MyPHRMachines, patients canaccess them again from remote virtual machines that contain the right software to visualize and analyze themwithout any need for conversion.

This paperdescribes the design and development of a software tool for the evaluationand training of surgical residents using an interactive, immersive, virtualenvironment. Our objective was to develop a tool to evaluate user spatialreasoning skills and knowledge in a neuroanatomical context, as well as toaugment their performance through interactivity. In the visualization,manually segmented anatomical surface images of MRI scans of the brainwere rendered using a stereo display to improve depth cues. Amagnetically tracked wand was used as a 3D input device for localizationtasks within the brain.

2014. Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. In this study, thevirtual reality (VR) proprioception rehabilitation system was developed forstroke patients to use proprioception feedback in upper limb rehabilitationby blocking visual feedback. To evaluate its therapeutic effect, 10 strokepatients (onset > 3 month) trained proprioception feedback rehabilitationfor one week and visual feedback rehabilitation for another week inrandom order. Proprioception functions were checked before, a week after,and at the end of training.

Yong-Lae Park, an assistant professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon hasdeveloped a soft-wearable orthotic device to assist sufferers of gaitabnormalities with ankle-foot rehabilitation. The bio-inspired device wasdesigned using soft plastics and composite materials to achieve morenatural motions of the ankle than a conventional rigid exoskeleton. Thesystem replicates the muscle-tendon-ligament-skin architecture of thelower limb anatomy. At its core the soft exoskeleton uses four pneumaticartificial muscles capable of achieving 14° of dorsiflexion and 13°plantarflexion in addition to ankle inversion and eversion.

The use of such devices for point-of-need diagnostics has been hindered by the need of standard or real-time PCR amplification procedures. The present work focuses on thedevelopment of a tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) based sensor for the real-time label free detection of DNA amplification via loop mediated isothermalamplification (LAMP) allowing for quantitative analysis of the cMYC proto-oncogene.

It establishes a robot-assistednatural AR guidance mechanism that incorporates the advantages of thefollowing three aspects: AR visual guidance information, surgeon'sexperiences and accuracy of robotic surgery.

Automated monitoring ofthe feeding patterns of growing-finishing pigs would allow detectingproblems with individual pigs or groups of pigs and thus improving health,welfare and productivity of the farm. In this paper a High Frequency RadioFrequency Identification (HF RFID) system was validated for its suitabilityto register individual pigs’ feeding patterns at a round trough in a group-housing context. High Frequency RFID antennas were installed above thetroughs of a commercially available type of round feeder to identify feedingpigs fitted with one or two passive RFID tags on their ears. A multiplexerwas used to connect multiple antennas to a single reader.

A volume-based massflow sensor system was developed to estimate the total mass of fruittravelling on the inclined and horizontal conveyors of two citrus mechanicalharvesting systems. A LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor wasused to scan the conveyor cross-sectional area and use the distancerelated-information to estimate the bulk volume and total mass of fruit onthe conveyor by integrating the data over time. A custom algorithm wasdeveloped to analyze the data and calculate the fruit volume. Fruit volumewas used to estimate the total fruit mass.

A software for the designand evaluation of surface irrigation systems (furrow, border and basin)along with the design of water conveyance systems (open channel andpipe line) is developed to assist users in educational and researchorganizations. The software named as ‘SIDES’ is developed using VisualBasic 6 programming language. The developed software for the design ofsurface irrigation systems is based on the volume balance approach and istested using the available published datasets. Results obtained using theSIDES matched well with the published datasets for all the designs.

Frommer had previously developed technology to spy ontransport protein activity by using fluorescent tags in a cell's DNA tomonitor the structural rearrangements that a transporter undergoes as itmoves its target molecule. They tailored this technology to five nitrogentransport targets to monitor the nitrogen uptake and assimilation process.

2014. Computer Communications. In an energy-constraint wireless sensornetwork (WSN), the sensor nodes near the Sink deplete their energyquickly due to heavy traffic and create a bottleneck zone. In a largemonitoring area, the sensor nodes in a cluster may communicate with thecluster head using multi-hop mode. A bottleneck effect can also be creatednear the cluster heads in a cluster based WSN with several clusters. Theclustering technique (along with data aggregation) exploits the datacorrelation among the sensors’ data and provides opportunities forreduction of energy consumption in WSN.

2013. Instrumentation and Measurement. Today, power systems are subject to fundamental changesconcerning functionality and dynamics due to new energy sources and increasing demand. However, detailedinformation of the system and the system state is the property of the suppliers or distributors, and is notcomprehensively available to researchers at present. We propose to capture easily accessible, high-rate, low-voltage (LV) time series at different locations, and to store the whole data for subsequent usage in a largedatabase. A system state simulation shall use these data and provide for load information without knowing thecurrents. For this purpose, we develop the electrical data recorder (EDR) and perform measurements in ourfirst starting test site, the island network like Karlsruhe Institute of Technology campus.

2014. Applied Energy. This paper presents the development of an energymanagement strategy of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). In thiscase, a rule-based optimal controller selects the appropriate operationmode. Furthermore, advantages and drawbacks of such vehicles arecompared with respect to other vehicles powered by the most popularpowertrain architectures. Simulations are carried out for three predefineddrive cycles repeated over different geographic regions with varying CO2intensities. The results reveal that the proposed controller is able to switchthe vehicle’s operating mode according to previous established criteria.

In 2013, EVs increased their market share by 70 percentfrom 2012 levels, while all-vehicle sales grew 8 percent to reach a six-yearhigh. Still, EV sales continue to lag forecasts made when these cars hit themarket in late 2010, accounting for less than 1 percent of new light-dutyvehicle sales. The strong growth in vehicle sales is mostly due to risingsales of gas-guzzling pickup trucks.

Mercom Capital Group, llc, a global clean energy communications and consulting firm, released its report onfunding and merger and acquisition (M&A) activity for the solar sector in 2013. Global venture capital (VC)investments dropped 40% to $600M in 97 deals in 2013 compared to $992M in 106 deals in 2012. Totalcorporate funding into the solar sector, encompassing VC, debt and public market financings, was up 25% in2013 to almost $10B, compared to ~$8B in 2012. VC funding in Q4 2013 totaled $87M in 24 deals compared to$197M in 28 deals in Q3 2013.
