Dear Ramsey Memorial UMC Saints,

On March 6 at 7:30pm we will gather in the sanctuary of our church and will

receive the placing of ashes upon our foreheads in the sign of the cross. As we do so,

we will hear, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” What an

odd thing to do and to hear if those are rituals you are not familiar with. Odd indeed.

But odd though it is, it is for many people the beautiful beginning of the season of

Lent. They know that those ashes on their foreheads and that reminder of our dusty

lives are the beginnings of a journey we take every Lent. A journey of self-reflection,

of introspection, of repentance. Journeys, by their very nature, are more focused on the

process than on the destination. So it is with Lent. So we will offer ourselves to God

to mold, shape, form and transform us during Lent.

From Ash Wednesday (March 6) until Resurrection Sunday (April 21) we walk

with the Lord focusing on the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Bible study, fasting and

self-denial. We may choose to give something up for Lent or to take up something new

like a habit of kindness or an additional time of prayer each day. Whatever we do, we

will do together as the Body of Christ, the Church called Ramsey Memorial.

So as we journey through Lent, let’s keep asking Jesus to do for us what we

have been praying for since 2019 began: that we will see as God sees, that we will

love as God loves, that we will change as God directs us to and that we will not be

content until we have reached every person we know with the love and the light of

Christ.

Ashes on our forehead. God’s love in our hearts. It’s going to be a beautiful

Lent as God’s church called Ramsey Memorial UMC!

With transforming hope,

Claudia

Desde un Rincón Pastoral

Regocijaos en el señor siempre. Otra vez os digo, ¡Regocijaos! Filipenses 4:4

Pastora, Norma Aguilar.

A morning prayer

At the start of a day, who can tell what a day may

bring forth? Cause me therefore, gracious God, to

live every day as if it were to be my last, for I know

not but that it may be such. Cause me to live now as I

shall wish I had done when I come to die. O grant

that I may not die with any guilt on my conscience,

or any known sin unrepented of, but that I may be

found in Christ, who is my only Savior and

Redeemer.

Our 2019 Lenten Offering will begin March 10

through Palm Sunday April 14. Traditionally, the

funds raised during this time are used for maintenance

projects around the church that are not covered by the regular budget. This year the Trus-

tees are planning to use this offering to convert several outside lights to LED lights, which

will save money and energy. We would also like to update the camera on the Fellowship

Hall door so that the staff will have better control over visitors entering the building, which

will improve our security.

Missions News

Our Summer Mission Team will be leaving on June 23 to Swansboro

NC to assist in the recovery there from hurricane Florence. We will

return the following Saturday June 29th. We are asking for your

support by providing our Annual Spud Sunday feast on Sunday

March 17th after the 11:00 Service. You will be seeing posters around the church to that

purpose. So please think about it get those taste buds a working.

The USO pizza for the returning a leaving troops was successful at no

cost to us. Because of the shakeup in the Papa Johns organization there

was less effort and therefore fewer hotel accommodations to fund in

the project than in the past years. However; we feel that will change for

the coming years. We are now getting our water for the USO from Walmart since Food

Lion had to stop it’s discounted water to us and the other churches that we work with for

the water.

Asbury’s Kathy Banton is looking into the homeless Veterans needs

in our area. I have asked her to let us know what she finds so I can

report that back to Ramsey.

COME & SEE This Ramsey Memorial small group invites you to come and join us! Everyone is wel-

Pathogens, those awful microorganisms that

make us sick, grow well in TCS food. Those are

foods that require “time and temperature control

for safety” – TCS. Cold food needs to be stored

at 41 degrees F or below. They can be held out

of the refrigerator to be served for up to six

hours (as long as they don’t get above 70

degrees). After six hours, they need to be

thrown away. After cooking, hot foods need to

be held at 135 degrees F or higher. Without a

heat source, hot foods can be held for service for

up to four hours. After four hours, they need to

be thrown away. And if a food is to be stored

frozen be sure it is put in the freezer. I once

threw out a big bag of chicken nuggets that were

put in a CLC

refrigerator.

They were

completely

thawed. If

you have

questions,

just ask. Jane

Why ashes on Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the

season of Lent. Lent is a time when many

Christians prepare for Easter by observing a

period of fasting, repentance, moderation a

spiritual discipline.

Ash Wednesday emphasizes two themes: our

sinfulness before God and our human

mortality. The service focuses on both themes,

helping us to realize that both have been

triumphed through the death and resurrection

of Jesus Christ.

During some Ash Wednesday services, the

minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross

with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers.

The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and

repentance has a long history in Jewish and

Christian worship. Historically, ashes signified

purification and sorrow for sins.

It is traditional to save the palm branches from

the previous Palm Sunday service to burn to

produce ashes for this service. Sometimes a

small card or piece of paper is distributed on

which each person writes a sin or hurtful or

unjust characteristic. The cards are then

brought to the altar to be burned with the palm

branches. The ash cross on the forehead is an

outward sign of our sorrow and repentance for

sins.

Faith journey A family was heading on vacation: two lit-

tle ones were nestled in car seats; the van

was packed. As Dad locked the house and

Mom secured the garage, an adult neighbor

the kids knew walked up and spoke

through an open window. “Where are you

going?” The kids shrugged. “Well, what

road are you taking?” the friend asked with

a knowing smile. Of course, they had no

idea. “Do you know where you’ll eat to-

day, or where you’ll spend the night?”

Blank stares. Then the friend asked, “Who

are you traveling with?” The children

broke into grins and shouted, “Mommy and

Daddy!”

On the journey of faith, we don’t know

precisely where we’re headed or how all

our needs will be met. But we know who

we’re traveling with: our loving God who

is fully aware of the twists and turns ahead;

the loving Parent who promises to care for

us wherever we go.

Pray without ceasing...Pray without ceasing...

Ash Wednesday prayer

Merciful God, you called us forth from the dust of the earth; you claimed us for Christ in

the waters of baptism. Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days bearing the mark of ash-

es, and bless our journey through the desert of Lent to the font of rebirth. May our fasting

be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; our prayer, the chant of humble and

grateful hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for a new beginning

Dear Lord, touch me with your Spirit of truth so I may be honest about my sins and failures.

Forgive me for treating your covenant lightly and at times ignoring it completely. Help me

truly seek and know forgiveness for all the hurts I’ve caused, for harboring ill will and for

any hardness of heart I may have. Please renew a right spirit within me that I may become

more Christ-like and that my life may daily reveal your love and light. In your name. Amen.

A prayer for families

Heavenly Father, we come as your children to praise you for putting us into families. Thank

you for the love and nourishment we’ve received — and been blessed to give. We confess

our need for your daily forgiveness and guidance in our families. Please grant harmony in

our homes and help us always show respect and love for one another. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.

A prayer for uncertain times

O God of heaven and earth, who’s bigger than nations and factions, be with us as we live

through times of terror, despair and danger. Be the strength of people who’ve been touched

personally by disaster. Come with healing to those who are injured. Be the eternal rest of

those who’ve died. Be the energy, compassion and fortitude of those who must pick

through the wreckage. Grant our leaders courage and a double portion of your wisdom. The

day of universal brotherhood seems farther off than ever, O God, but help us not despair of

trying to accomplish it. Strengthen our faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A child's prayer for protection God in heaven, hear my

prayer.

Keep me in thy loving

care.

Be my guide in all I do.

Bless all those who love

me too. Amen.

Indulge for Lent?

Rather than sacrificing something for

Lent — especially something easy and

spiritually insignificant, such as choco-

late — Patty Kirk,

in Guideposts magazine, suggests finding

new ways to indulge in God’s presence.

Surely one can do this by having extra

devotions or attending Lenten worship

services. But Kirk offers these ideas:

• Spend time outdoors, sensing God’s

magnificence.

• Spend time with others, extending gen-

erosity and compassion. Remember Je-

sus’ promise that when you care for oth-

ers, you care for him (Matthew 25:31-

46).

• Pray for the “little things,” coming be-

fore God in childlike trust and feeling

peace.

• Watch attentively for God’s answers to

prayer, and receive them as reminders of

his presence.

• Turn anxiety into prayer. As you frame

concerns as prayers and entrust them to

God, you “sacrifice” the tendency to

wallow in worry.
