Free Health Screenings atMidWest LatinoFest!

A Houston-based, five-sis-ter band will headline the en-tertainment at this year’sMidWest LatinoFest on Satur-day, June 8, 2013, noon to 11p.m. at Promenade Park indowntown Toledo.

Las Fénix will take centerstage at 9 p.m. The fiveRodríguez sisters featureTejano and regional Mexicanmusic popular in La Fronterain a repertoire that festival or-ganizers hope will appeal toLatinos of all ages and back-grounds.

According to the band’sbiography, Las Fénix started

unofficially in 1999, whenfour of the sisters surprisedtheir father David Rodríguezon his birthday by singing acouple of songs. He now man-ages the band with supportfrom the entire family. Sr.Rodríguez has recorded hisown music as a solo act in thepast—mainly to pass out tofamily and friends. He is origi-nally from Michoacán,México.

Nadia, 23, plays bass gui-tar. Lesli, 22, is one of thelead singers and plays theBajo Quinto guitar. Adela,21, plays the drums. Berna,

19, is a lead singer and playsthe accordion. The youngestsister Anahi, a 12-year-oldstill in junior high school, only recently joined the bandand plays percussion. Shealso tours with the band whenshe’s not in school.

“At the beginning, shewasn’t really into it. But when-ever we would sign posters orpictures, she was right therenext to us,” said Adela. “Sowhen she was signing pic-tures, my dad was like—‘ifyou’re going to be in the pic-tures, why not be in the band?’So she joined and it’s a lot offun having her around. Butshe really doesn’t like to prac-tice that much. She does agood job and hanging aroundus now has a better under-standing of what it takes.”

“I’m happy and I’m excitedto be in the band,” said Anahi, who admitted she looks up toher older sisters. “When I’mnot there, our fans get all madbecause I’m not there and Ilike that.”

Anahi admits she “getsspecial attention” from herdad because she is so muchyounger than the other mem-bers of the band.

“My dad, he pushes theothers to do their best, but notso much me—because my sis-ters do that instead,” Anahisaid. “I like the fact many of

our fans are younger kidslike me.”

Education is important tothe Rodríguez family

The older four girls takeonline college courses part-time. Nadia is studying ac-counting. Lesli hopes to go tolaw school someday. Adelawants to be a veterinarian.Berna plans to become ateacher. Anahi already plansto go to medical school andbecome a doctor.

“We know this won’t lastforever, so we aspire to otherthings,” explained Nadi byphone from the band’s Hous-ton office. “We’re having funwhile it lasts and sharing itwith our family. We’re neveralone. This is a really great, great thing in our lives and itkeeps us sisters together.”

The band’s performancewill be the first time in Toledo, but they’ll make a second stopthe following day in Cincin-nati. Las Fénix, has releasedfive CDs to date, including itslatest effort, Perfume. A sixth,as-yet untitled CD will be re-leased sometime this summer. It is described as half covertunes from the 1990s and theother half original songspenned by the band’s pro-ducer and another songwriter. But the band does write manyof its own songs that have ap-peared on prior releases.

“So we’re giving our audi-ence songs that they know, songs that were really well-done but we do them in ourown style,” said Lesli.

Lesli is considered by hersisters as the unofficial leaderof the band. Her sisters call hera guiding force in decision-making and that they usuallyagree with her reasoning.

Las Fénix is considered anup-and-coming act in the Latinomusic industry. Just two yearsago, the band signed with amajor record label in the Latinoindustry known as Disa/Uni-versal.

The family-oriented bandpromotes itself heavily wher-ever it performs, conductingradio, TV, and newspaper inter-views extensively. The grouphas performed all over the U.S.including California, NewMexico, and as far away as Illi-nois, Georgia, and Florida. Theeldest sister Ana serves as theband’s office manager, field-ing phone requests for inter-views and booking shows.

Las Fénix pays homage toboth its Tejano and Mexicancultural heritage, by singing itsmusic in English and signingin Spanish. The band also playsa high-energy stage show thatallows the audience to dancealong to the songs.

“I think that’s how we getpeople to come out and see us,”said Lesli. “I think about halfthe people stand there watch-ing and recording things be-cause they’ve never seen fivegirls on stage singing and danc-ing and playing. The other halfis singing and dancing rightalong with us.”

“It’s fun. It’s not a bunch ofstrangers who came togetherand said, ‘Hey, let’s make a

band,’” added Adela. “It justcame naturally to us and onstage, we just really connect. Ifsomeone is doing somethingwrong, we just look at eachother. I think being sisters justmakes it more special and moreunique. Even having our par-ents there each time—we’rereally grateful for it.”

“We’re all bonding andwe’re all together. It’s really abeautiful thing,” added Berna.

The young musicians in theband also encourage their peersto fall in love with a sport ormusic or art, as a means ofavoiding negative influencesand people. The sisters main-tain the best part about beingon stage and entertaining ishearing the applause of theaudience and the kind wordsthey receive following a per-formance.

“It keeps people out oftrouble, I think. The music hasreally helped us. If we weren’tdoing this, I don’t know wherewe’d be,” admitted Berna.“This has really kept us down-to-earth and united. There’s alot of bad things going on inthe world right now and thishas kept us focused.”

“I’m occupied and not do-ing drugs like other teens,”said Anahi, who called it a funoutlet. “I’m busy doing musicand not other bad stuff likeother teens.”

Admission to MidWestLatinoFest is $5, but is free forchildren 11 and under, seniorcitizens age 65 and older, aswell as anyone who shows amilitary ID.

May 21, 2013: The OhioDepartment of Transportation(ODOT) unveiled a map identi-fying interstate highway loca-tions where motorists will belegally permitted to drive 70miles per hour beginning thissummer.
