Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
Today’s Liturgy of the Word is hyperbole in action! In age when rationalization is the standard for most actions, today’s Word is crystal clear – total commitment to the Divine Way is demanded. Listening to the Word of God can be most unsettling for those people who have a mind and will of their own. The gift of free will, bestowed by God upon mankind from the beginning, is not a license for self-gratification. Just the opposite. Love requires free will if it is to come to fruition. Love cannot be forced upon anyone nor can it be demanded. It must be freely accepted and freely given. It is not selfishness or hubristic centered. Thus, God, who is Love, can only be found and experienced through willful and deliberate means. This quest to know God has continually been in conflict with rationalization which tends to dismiss or even deny what the human mind cannot grasp.
In today’s first reading from the Book of Wisdom, the Herculean difficulty of this search is expressed. Using the prayer of Solomon, Wisdom is the expressed desire of the person. Recognizing the infinite Wisdom of God, the author of this book acknowledges the limitations of man that come from his bodily and earthly origins. This earthly distraction can only be overcome by the Holy Spirit which makes things on earth straight and puts everything into proper perspective. Today’s passage is a clear affirmation that true wisdom and happiness can come only from discovering and experiencing the Divine.
This same search for Wisdom by man is exemplified in today’s second reading from the Letter of Paul to Philemon. Interestingly, this private letter reflects the just action that Philemon should exhibit when he receives back a runaway slave, Onesimus, who was converted and befriended by Paul. Knowing the punishment that could be inflicted, Paul requests that Philemon should receive the slave as he would receive Paul, himself, a free man and a Roman citizen. The Apostle to the Gentiles reminds the former owner that Onesimus is now a brother in Christ and should be welcomed back as a family member not just as a possession. The righteousness of this act is found in the adoption of all through baptism into the Body of Christ. The transformation by this sacrament reveals the will of God that surpasses the way of the world. It is in this rejection of the world that justification is found.
It is not until Christ’s message in today’s Gospel by Luke that the degree of rejection of the world required for
Christians is emphasized. Using a clearly hyperbolic statement, Christ makes clear the total commitment required by his followers. Attacking the very structure of the ancient world, the family, Jesus states that his followers
must hate their father, mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters as well as their own very life! This anti-social statement would be shocking to very people that Christ hoped to save. This statement is followed by another directive that makes the first one more ominous and foreshadowing. Jesus states that “…Whoever does
not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Seeing these two statements together clarifies what being a Christian will require in the years to come. As Jesus goes on to explain, a follower of his must consider the cost of discipleship if they are to truly experience the conversion necessary for the Kingdom of God. Discipleship will require sacrificial love – agape. This love is the love that is God. It is the only true love and, as such, will require the freely given sacrifice for the benefit of others. It is this love that Jesus will reveal on the cross. It is the same love that His disciples must show to the world in order to gain access to the Heavenly Kingdom. It is a love that requires pain and suffering coupled with the grace of God that will “set fire to the world”. Only through agape can God be discovered and incorporated into the human experience. This Divine and Human symbiotic relationship can occur within agape, and it is only through this means that mankind can reach the status for which he was created.
The Church reminds us and our world today that God can only be discovered through this unique and divinely revealed means. She cautions us to be warry of rationalization because we have only a limited level of comprehension. The world wants us to believe that our minds can continually seek to discover the “truths of the universe” when in reality those “Truths” are based in the ultimate Wisdom of God who is beyond human understanding. True Wisdom requires us to know our limitations and requires us to place our faith in the Hands of He who created all. This can only be done through agape – sacrificial love. It is this love that will transform the world and the individual through the Divine Fire into the eternal and everlasting personage that was promised and revealed through Christ, Our Lord and King.

SAINT OF THE WEEK:
St. Peter Claver
September 9th
A native of Spain, St. Peter left his home forever to
become a missionary in Cartagena, Columbia in 1610.
He was ordained a Jesuit priest there. The slave trade
was well established in the new World colonies and
Cartagena was a major port for it. Thousands of slaves
poured in by ship under conditions so foul and
inhumane that about a third died while in transit from their homeland.
St. Peter went into the ships' holds to minister and provide the slaves with
medicine and food. He continued this ministry for forty years, baptizing over
300,000 slaves. He assured them of their human dignity and God's love for
them. His determination to serve the most abused and rejected with the power
of the Holy Spirit demonstrates our need to open ourselves to the work of God
around us.
