SEASON OUTLOOK
6
will provide Northwest with a utility player who can play rst or third
base and will probably see time on the mound. Junior transfer MtchLooms (Topeka, Kan.), another utility player, could see time at DH
or in the ineld.
Outfeld
It will be an entire new look in the outeld this season after losing
Matt Coons, Will Newland and Tristan Stewart to graduation. Coons(.415) and Newland (.385) were the teams top two hitters and their
sticks will be tough to replace. Stewarts bat (.294) tied for a team lead
in doubles with 17.
Coach Loe will replace the entire outeld with mostly transfers.
Juniors Todd Schonhoff(Smithville, Mo.) in left eld and DrewDeMott (Maryville, Mo.) in right eld. Schonhoff transferred from
Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) and DeMott came from
Highland Community College (Kan.). Sophomore Chrs Benham(Blue Springs, Mo.) and junior Jake Bradshaw (Kansas City, Mo.)
will swap time in center to start the season. Benham played two sea-sons at Southern (La.) University while Bradshaw played two seasons
at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Freshman Tim Avants(St. Charles, Mo.) will be the only outelder on the roster who is not
a transfer.
Ptchn
Northwest only lost two pitchers that logged more than 20 inningsin Mark Lewis (52.0) and Travis Fouts (43.2). Lewis had a team-best
3.63 ERA and walked only eight batters all season. Fouts started
nines games, the second most of any pitcher, and threw a ve-hit,nine-inning shutout in his last start against Central Missouri (5/5).
Seven pitchers return to the staff from the 2006 season, six of whom
are seniors. The returners had a combined 17-11 record last year led
by senior Brian Lamers seven wins. Seniors Lamer, Justn Hldeb-rand (St. Joseph, Mo.), Matt Kelly (Maryville, Mo.), andJosh Norrs
(Chillicothe, Mo.) will return to the staff as starters. Cody Snclar(Indianola, Iowa) and Zach Weston (New Franklin, Mo.) will bereturning to the bullpen again this season, along with closer Brett
Whittle.
We added a lot of quality to our pitching staff, Loe commented
on the four transfers and two freshman that were added to his pitch-ing staff. The four transfers come from Southwest Baptist, DannyMalone (Blue Springs, Mo.); St. Louis Community College, JoelEpley (St. Louis, Mo.); University of Missouri, Bret Harvel (Lees
Summit, Mo.); and Maple Woods Community College (Mo.), EvanNckell (Smithville, Mo.). The two freshmen areAdam Swtzer (In-
dependence, Mo.), a true freshman, and Ben Stedronsky (Lincoln,Neb.), a redshirt freshman.
Redshrts
Coach Loe will redshirt 11 players this season. Andy Bern (Wa
hoo, Neb.), Trevor Conner (Creston, Iowa) and Dustn Sandler(St. Joseph, Mo.) are three pitchers that will redshirt. Two inelders
Alex Brown (Ankeny, Iowa) and Ryan Rush (St. Joseph, Mo.), wil wait another year. Myles Antle (St. Joseph, Mo.), Chance Allen
(Waynesville, Mo.) and Clay Bollner (Webb City, Mo.) are all catch-ers. Bret Harper (Liberty, Mo.), Brandon Krsh (Papillion, Neb.and Casey Schultz (St. Joseph, Mo.) round out the redshirt class of2007 as outelders.
