Capital Group, Inc., Reno, Nevada, USA). La amplitud del campo visual horizontal fue
evaluada con el Test de Desplazamiento Dorsal (Sillero, 1998; Sillero, Refoyo, Lorenzo, &
Sampedro, 2007).

(VAOD = 1.14, SD = 0,34; VAOI = 1.16, SD =0.37; VAOU = 1.28, SD = 0.11). Los
resultados del T-Test para los resultados de agudeza visual (tOD(54) = 0.16, p = 0.87; tOI(54) =
1.03, p = 0.30; tOU(54) = 1.68, p = 0.09) mostraron que las pequeñas diferencias entre grupos
no eran significativas.
ligeramente mejores, (VAOD(AOA) = 0.98, SD = 0.24; VAOI(AOA) = 0.94, SD = 0.27;
VAOD(AOA) = 1.03, SD = 0.24).

COMPARING VISUAL ABILITIES OF EUROPEAN FIBA AND SPANISH EBA
BASKETBALL OFFICIALS.
INTRODUCTION.
Officials play a crucial role in the course of a basketball match. Their decisions are
based on an appropriate perception of all the elements of the scenario; therefore they
require a perfect condition of their visual abilities (Sillero & Sampedro, 2004). Some of the
most relevant visual abilities for basketball officials are distance visual acuity (Loran &
MacEwen, 1995) and horizontal visual field width (Sampedro, 2002).
Distance visual acuity ensures a good quality image (Garland & Barry, 1990). The
higher the visual acuity, the sharper the image perceived by the official and the greater the
amount of information received from the ball, players and the background. In order hand,
the amplitude of the visual field limits the performance not only of the players (Ferreira,
2003), but also of the officials.
The European Basketball Federation (FIBA-Europe) is concerned about the
significance of vision in refereeing; for this reason and in order to make the officials aware
of these fact, FIFA financially supported a study (carried out by the authors of the present
work) to test the official’s visual abilities. We also jointly organized some lectures about
sports vision for officials in a clinic organized to select the referees for the next
international competitions (Gran Canaria, Spain, 2007). At that meeting the authors assisted
in the quality of ??? as well as data collection. Following the ecological approach of
previous works (Sillero, Refoyo, Lorenzo, & Sampedro, 2007), we have applied in this

study simple and valid tests in order to obtain data that can be easily used by other
researchers in sports vision.
MATERIAL AND METHOD.
This study was performed on 26 International Professional FIBA officials (22 male
and 4 female) aged 32.1 years in average (SD = 4.6 years), who were participating in the
FIBA Europe Clinic for Potential Referees (Gran Canaria, 14-18th and 21-25th June, 2007)
In order to carry out further statistical analyses, non-published data from a similar
sample of Spanish EBA officials (29 subjects, 28 male and 1 female, aged 30.9 years; SD =
3.2) have been considered.
Officials’ distance visual acuity was assessed with the Keystone (Nevada Capital
Group, Inc., Reno, Nevada, USA). The amplitude of the horizontal visual field was
assessed by the Walking Backwards Test (Sillero, 1998; Sillero, Refoyo, Lorenzo, &
Sampedro, 2007).
T-Test for two independent samples (FIBA and EBA officials) were run for distance
visual acuity and horizontal visual field results using SPSS 9.0.
RESULTS.
Monocular (right eye = OD and left eye = OI) and binocular (OU) Snellen visual
acuity coefficients (VA) were excellent for both EBA (VAOD = 1.13, SD = 0,31; VAOI =
1.07, SD =0.30; VAOU = 1.16, SD = 0.31) and FIBA (VAOD = 1.14, SD = 0,34; VAOI =
1.16, SD =0.37; VAOU = 1.28, SD = 0.11) officials. T-Test results for visual acuity results
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto

(tOD(54) = 0.16, p = 0.87; tOI(54) = 1.03, p = 0.30; tOU(54) = 1.68, p = 0.09) showed that slight
differences between groups were not significant.
Horizontal visual field values (HVF) expressed in degrees were significantly
wider (t(54) = 2.48, p < 0.05) for FIBA officials (HVFFIBA = 180.3º, SD = 11.1º) than for
EBA officials (HVFFIBA = 169.8º, SD = 18.0º).
DISCUSSION
The results show excellent VA values in both FIBA and EBA officials. When we
compared these results with others collected in a visual screening of the AOA Sports Vision
Section carried out on basketball officials (Harris & Blum, 1984), which were taken with
the same instrument (Keystone), we found that our data were slightly better (VAOD(AOA) =
0.98, SD = 0.24; VAOI(AOA) = 0.94, SD = 0.27; VAOD(AOA) = 1.03, SD = 0.24). However, it
has to be considered that our sample was more than 10 years younger (AgeAOA 44.7 years;
SD = 10.2) and the AOA sample included both active and non-active officials from
different levels. Between the age of 40 and 50, the visual acuity deficits generated by
presbyopia appear (Greene & Madden, 1987); we consider therefore that the better visual
acuity results in our sample may be due to the age differences.
The horizontal visual field recorded for FIBA officials (180.3º), is higher than the
normal value of 170 degrees (Harrington & Drake, 1990) and significantly wider than the
results for EBA officials. These data could support the idea that visual field width is a
typical characteristic of the better basketball officials.
In the literature it is stated that horizontal visual field range and efficiency
can be improved through training and sports experience (Mizusawa, Sweeting, & Knouse,
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
1983); for this reason, training the amplitude of the visual field can be a good strategy in
order to improve refereeing performance.

A INFLUÊNCIA DA FADIGA NA TOMADA DE DECISÃO DE JOVENS
BASQUETEBOLISTAS

min.) a que se seguia a avaliação da percepção subjectiva de esforço (escala CR10;
cinco-contra-cinco (15 min.).

THE INFLUENCE OF FATIGUE ON DECISION MAKING BY JUNIOR
BASKETBALL PLAYERS
INTRODUCTION
As a team ball sport, basketball is characterized by the complexity of the
interactions of players, where the intention of each team to have the ball to score is
omnipresent. Due to these facts and to the dynamics of the game, it is not possible to
predict in advance the decisions and the actions of each player (Araújo et al., 2004).
Following Araújo et al. (2004; Davids et al., 2006), decision making is an emergent
process that results from the interaction of several kinds of constraints (organismic,
environmental, and task). An important organismic constraint in sport is fatigue, defined
as the reduction of performance on a task due to the need to continue working on that
task (Reilly, 2003). Even though research on the relationship between fatigue and
cognition seem to show detrimental effects for performance, recent findings show that
fatigue specific to the task facilitate decision-making in skilled players (Royal et al.,
2006). The influence of fatigue on the self-organization of decision making towards a
task goal is not clear, yet, particularly in representative tasks of the domain towards
which researches want to generalize their findings (e.g., training session). This
clarification of the effects of fatigue on decision making on a task representative of the
training session is the aim of this study.
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
METHODS
Six male basketball players, 16-17 years old, with six years of deliberate
practice, participated in this study. They were studied in three training sessions of three
consecutive microcycles, where in two determined moments of each session, they
played constrained three vs three games. In these situations, researchers were interested
in the emergent one vs one situations for analysis.
Each session started with warm-up exercises 15 minutes (min.). Then players
where evaluated during six minutes about their perceived effort (scale CR10 from Borg,
2001), about their anaerobic power following Bosco et al. (1983) protocol - Squat-Jump
test, Counter-Movement Jump test, and 15 seconds test. The next seven min. where
spent on flexibility and joint mobility exercises. Then, there was the main part of the
session with 15 min of exercises focused on fast break. After this, there were the three
on three games, during nine min., where the decisional behaviour was recorded, as well
as perceived effort and anaerobic power were tested (plus six min.). Then, the players
played five on five games for 15 minutes. Finally, there was a new moment for three vs
three with the same recording and testing mentioned before.
For the analysis of the decisional behaviour, a conceptual system of notational
analyses was created, focusing on the characteristics of a goal-directed dynamical
system: stability and breaking of stability (e.g., dribble penetration to basket or three-
point shot), exploration (e.g., number of dribbling and fake movements), and efficacy
(shots attempted and shots made).
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
RESULTS
The analysis of the perceived exertion revealed a growth tendency along the
moments of the session. In the Squat Jump test and in the 15 seconds test the medium
values obtained in the three moments of training were relatively constant, while in
Counter-Movement Jump a small decrease of the jump height was verified (38cm for
36.6cm, p.284). In the analysis of the decisional behaviour the number of dribbling
remained constant, while the other exploration categories expressed small changes that
don’t follow a common pattern in the training session. In what relates to effectiveness,
an increase of the average of points scored was verified (6.34 for 7.94, p.066), while all
the other variables didn’t present significant modifications.
DISCUSSION
The results suggested a facilitation of the decisional behaviour (efficacy) that
expresses a capability to adapt to the increase of the time of exercise (fatigue) by the
athletes; in spite of their perception of a significantly increase in the intensity of effort.
Additionally, the evolving attunement to the relevant information in the game may have
contributed to a better adjustment of the perception-action coupling, expressed in an
increase of effectiveness of the actions taken part in the game.
The random variations of certain categories may indicate that the improvement
of the efficiency happened from the modification of the coordination processes, which
underline the self-organization properties of the individual’s functional systems for the
accomplishing of the task. For example, the reduction of the shot fake actions allowed
energy saving for other actions that contributed more to goal achievement.

46 niñas pertenecientes a 4 equipos masculinos y 4 femeninos.
Instrumental.
Se utilizaron 94 cuestionarios.
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
Procedimiento.

SATISFACTION IN MINIBASKET PLAYERS
INTRODUCTION
Participation in sport has certain outstanding intrinsic values for players, such as
enjoying themselves, learning and improving skills, doing something at which one is good,
being with friends and experiencing success. This demonstrates that winning is neither the
only nor the most common reason for participating. The enjoyable development of the
activity, without mediating a direct external satisfaction, is by itself the objective and the
reward, provoking in the subject feelings of competence and self-realization (Duda, 1996).
For a boy to choose, to begin and to stay in a sport, it has to offer some attraction or be able to
satisfy some of his needs (Duda & Nicholls, 1992; Ommnundsen, Roberts, Lemyre, & Miller,
2005), therefore it is interesting to know the reasons that encourage him to begin and to
remain in the sport.
The objective of the present communication is to try to know, through a questionnaire,
what the boy really enjoys and makes him feel well when he practices minibasket and, as a
consequence, continue practicing it.
METHOD
Sample.
94 minibasket players of Andalusian Provincial teams, consisting of 48 boys and 46
girls belonging to 4 boys’ teams and 4 girls’ teams.
Instruments.
94 questionnaires were used.
Procedure.
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
The researchers drew up a questionnaire on the basis of the one proposed by Cervelló
(1996). It was administered to the players after the first game that each team played in the
Provincial Teams Tournament. The procedure followed for the validation of the questionnaire
was as follows:
1. After its preparation it was presented to experts so that they could express their
opinion and suggest corrections. The questionnaire was then evaluated by professors
and basketball coaches as well as by linguists.
2. After this evaluation, the phrasing of some of the statements in the questionnaire
was modified to make them more intelligible to the age group (9-11 years).
3. Validation of the questionnaire. A pilot test of the measuring instrument was made.
The questionnaire was applied to forty players belonging to the population studied
(minibasket players in La Zubia (Granada, Spain) Basketball Club). Thus, the questionnaire
was administered twice to the group of children concerned one week apart. Later the
reliability and the validity of the questionnaire were calculated. In order to calculate the
reliability by test-retest, correlations were made between the scores for each item of the
questionnaire, obtaining values on the Spearman-Brown index superior to .89 for each one.
The index of internal consistency was calculated, through Cronbach’s alpha, at .90.
RESULTS
Table 1 sets out the results obtained for each item of the questionnaire. As the players
were so young, they were asked to give a score on a scale from 0 to 100 for fun and well-
being. The table shows the percentage of value that the players assigned to each item.
As indicated in Table 1, 34.0% of the players enjoyed and felt very well (giving the maximum
score) when they learn new movements, with 92.1% in excess of value 50. 89.4% also feel

well and enjoy themselves (over value 50) when they understand new game situations, that is,
when they feel they have achieved a certain mastery of the task, one of the two success
markers that work in sport (Duda, 1996; Duda & Nicholls, 1992). The other marker, that of
competitiveness, is expressed in item number 4, in which 91% say they enjoy themselves
(over value 50) when comparing himself with the others, and does even better; 36.3% feel
very well (value 100) when they demonstrate that they are better than others. This fact is also
assessed in item nº6 in which 43.6% of the players indicate that they feel well and enjoy
themselves very much when the games are a challenge for them.

67.0% of the players feel very well and enjoy winning games very much. It is the item
to which the greatest percentage of players granted the maximum score; however, although
victory is something that makes the boy feel good, it is necessary for the coach to minimize
the importance of the result as a criterion of success and failure; this is a fundamental rule to
increase the boy’s fun (Duda, 1996). 80.9% of the players indicate values above 70 when
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto

asked if they feel good when they please their coach. The same happens with parents (87.3%)
and friends (84%), data that corroborate the importance of the “primary sport family” in sport
initiation. A high percentage of players present elevated values of fun and well-being (over
value 70) when they participate more in the team’s play during the game (87.2%); they play
more time (76.6%), they shoot at the basket more often (76.6%) and do new things (87.2%).
These results vindicate the proposals to modify minibasket rules that have been made
frequently in recent years such as those by Piñar (2005).
CONCLUSIONS
After analysing the results obtained, it can be concluded that, in general, minibasket
players enjoy themselves more and feel better: The more they please their parents, coaches
and friends, the higher their level of competition and the greater their participation in their
team’s game so having more possibility to practice skills.

cambios significativos respecto a (POST 3.
ha presentado diferencias en los valores de PESO (PRE 1) vs. PESO (POST 2);
respecto a (PRE 1); (p<0.01).

ENZIMES AND METABOLITES RESPONSES TO COMPETITION MATCHES IN TOP LEVEL JUNIOR MALE BASKETBALL PLAYERS
INTRODUCTION
Kuipers et al. investigated the control of enzymatic parameters (Creatine kinase
(CPK); Lactatodeshidrogenase (LDH); Fosfofruktokinase (PK)), to monitoring the
training load and the inter-relationships with recovery process. But, there is a few
scientific evidence in basketball (Rotenberg et al. 1988; Hoffman et al. 1999; Stalnacke
et al. 2003), moreover there is a few articles about the energetic metabolism in young
men (Haralambie y col. 1982). It was thus the aim of this investigation: 1) to study the
enzymatic, and metabolites responses in two competitive matches in a group of highly
trained junior male basketball players before, during and after the matches in
relationship with the position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
SUBJECTS. 9 international junior male basketball players participated in this
study, included in the Siglo XXI project of Spanish basketball Federation in the Centro
de Perfeccionamiento Técnico (C.P.T) of Basque Government. All members of the
Spanish Junior’s National Team in three different positions (Guards, n=3; Forwards,
n=3; Centers, n=3). Anthropometrics characteristics of the subjects (mean±SD):16±0
years; 91±6.7 kg; 197.5±5 cm; 8.13±2.3 Body Fat (%). STUDY DESIGN. The subjects
were examined before (Pre), after (Post) the matches and 48 hours post-matches (Post 1)

during the two matches. MEASUREMENTS. Blood samples were drawn from the ear
after the subjects had rested for 10 minutes in a seated position. STATISTICAL
METHODS. Means and standard deviations were calculated for all the variables.
ANOVA was employed to compare Pre 1, Post and Post 1 values of the different
parameters measured. A paired “t”-test to repeated measures was used. The level of
significance was set at p<0.05. The Pearson's correlation is used. The statistical analysis
has been performed with SPSS 14.0.
RESULTS.
Plasma CPK concentration increased significantly during the match (p<0.01),
and there was significant difference between the Post match values and Post 1 (p<0.05).
There were no significant differences between Pre values and Post values. A significant
response in LDH values to repeated days was seen between Pre and Post values
(p<0.05). There were no significant differences between Pre values and Post 1 values.
The ALP decreased significantly (p<0.01) between Pre values and Post 1 hours values.
But we did not observed significant differences between Pre values and Post match
values. Urea in blood was significantly higher after the match (p<0.01). But there were
no significant differences between Post values and Post 1 values. The weight was
significantly decreased during the match (p<0.01) and after finishing the match
(p<001).

DISCUSSION.
There are a few scientific articles about the monitoritation systems of the
training load during competition in basketball using enzymatic parameters (Hoffman et.
al. 1999; Stalnacke et al. 2003). Only one of these studies used top-level basketball
players (Hoffman et al. 1999) and another one (Rotenberg et al. 1988), with young men.
The main findings of our study can be explaining the enzymatic adaptation during
competition. The alkaline phosphates, is an enzyme present in the human body tissues
and plays a major role in the liver and bone. It presents a greater variety of isoforms
relationed with cellular activity in bones. One of the major reserves of alkaline
phosphatase is in the young’s bones during the maturation period. In our study we
observed a significant decrement (p<0.01) between Pre values and Post 1 values
(235.10±99.31 vs. 212.68±73.29). But it did not described significant differences

between Pre values and Post match values, but significant increments Post 1 values after
finishing the match. In young men this parameter is altered, when the bone metabolism
is elevated, on the other hand, there are not other researches about this parameter during
competition with young players to contrast our data. The CPK in blood is relationed
with muscle damage reflected in biomechanical changes. In our investigation, we
reported plasma CPK concentration increased significantly during the match (p<0.01),
although in other studies (Hoffman et al. 1999) not described changes in concentration
CPK, after 4 weeks of intensive training neither during the training period. LDH is most
often measured to evaluate the presence of tissue damage. The enzyme LDH is in many
body tissues. LDH catalyzes the interconversion of pyruvate and lactate. Many
researches described significant increments after short training (Linnosier et al. 1993),
equally other Scientists didn’t found this relation (Thorstensson et al. 1975). Our data
showed significant changes in the LDH pre values vs. LDH post values, but not LDH
post versus post 1 values. In our study with a selective group of junior players, it
confirms that basketball matches influence LDH concentration than previous studies
had reported. Rotenberg et al. (1988), showed significant differences in the LDH values
before starting the match vs. the values after finishing the match with college players.
When the enzyme LDH is present in high levels in the blood, are alterations in
mitochondrial or cellular membrane permeability, that happen due to increase in
catecholamines in addition to oxygen deficit. Protein catabolic rate derived from
measured total UREA output was compared with recorded daily protein intake. A rapid
increment of this parameter, may suggest a catabolic situation (Lehman et al. 1991). The
UREA values had experimented a significant increment after the match vs. pre-values
(p<0.01). There was not significant differences, in contrast with other studies (Hofmann

et al. 1999), there were not significant changes in the UREA concentration, alter

baloncesto (Vaquera y Cols., 2002; Greene y Cols., 1998).

respetó las indicaciones de la Internacional Asociation for the Avancement of
Kinanthropometry (ISAK).

rendimiento (Greene y Cols., 1998; García-López y Villa, 2004).

CORRELATION BETWEEN ANTHROPOMETRIC PARAMETERS, JUMP
POWER AND POSITION OCCUPIED IN THE FIELD OF PROFESSIONAL
BASKETBALL PLAYERS.
INTRODUCTION
Jump power has been described as a factor affecting performance in basketball
(Vaquera et al.; 2002; Greene et al.; 1998). It varies according to the position of the
players on the court, as it is affected by their physical characteristics, which are adapted
to the performance requirements of each position on court (Vaquera et al.; 2001).
Determining the relationship of jump power with the anthropometric variables of the
players, defined by the positions occupied on court, provides objective data allowing
physical trainers to individualise players’ training, adapting it to their characteristics and
the demands of the game.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
The data was gathered during the 2004 and 2005 pre-seasons, during August at
the Technification Centre in Alicante. The subjects of the study (n=24, 27.9±4.56 of
age) were the members of the first squad of a Professional Basketball Club belonging to
the Spanish Basketball Clubs Association (ACB).
The methodology used for the anthropometric technique complied with the
guidelines of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry

(ISAK). The fat percentage was calculated by using the Yuhasz equation, modified by
Faulkner (1968).
The Bosco Test was used to determine the jump power of the players. Of the set
of jumps performed, we selected the data corresponding to the Squat Jump (SJ) and the
Countermovement Jump (CMJ), as these jumps are the most technically similar to those
made in competitive basketball.
RESULTS
Average player weight was (96.60±12.14 Kilos), average height was (198.31± 7.29
centimetres), and average arm span was (200.60± 9.37 centimetres). Centres have a greater
average weight, height and arm span than forwards and point guards, although the
greater fat weight of the latter is highly significant (Graph 1). In turn, the muscle weight
of the centres was very significantly higher than the forwards and point guards. These
results coincide with those found in recent literature (Rodríguez Bravo et al,. 2007).

When we measure jump power as quantified by the Squat Jump (SJ), no
significant difference can be seen between players in different positions, with the values
for the forwards being higher and those of the point guards and centres being very
similar. However, when the jump is performed with Countermovement (CMJ), there are
highly significant differences that favour the forwards, who reach greater heights than
the centres and point guards, with there also being a non-significant difference
favouring the point guards over the centres.

Our results show a highly significant (p<0.01) negative correlation (Pearson
correlation coefficient) between the values of fat percentage and body mass index and
the countermovement jump values (r=-0.758 and r=-0.842, respectively). However, no
significant correlations were obtained for the Squat Jump
DISCUSSION
The heaviest players (centres) show greater fat and muscle weight in their body
composition, as well as a higher body mass index. When they perform
countermovement jumps they also show significantly inferior values to those of the
forwards, which indicates that they are less able to use the reactive capacity of the
CIB’2007. IV Congreso Ibérico de Baloncesto
Desde la base a la élite deportiva
muscle, as do the point guards. This is a performance factor that should be trained, as
most jumps carried out during matches use countermovement (Cook et al, 2004).
However, the final jump height achieved by centre and forwards is normally the same,
as although the centres do not jump as high in real terms, their greater arm span and
height mean that they reach the same final height, with their greater weight meaning
that they show a lesser reactive capacity. In conclusion, centres should focus their
training on achieving better jump values, not by losing body weight, which would make
them lose position and physical presence in their area of play (the paint), but by gaining
muscle tissue by losing fat tissue. However, point guards have the least body weight but
do not show significantly better results than centres in countermovement jumps. This
may indicate a deficit in this area. It is true, however, that this is not their main
performance factor (Greene and Cols., 1998; García-López and Villa, 2004).

captar y seleccionar talentos deportivos
(sprints, saltos,…) y submáximos (carrera moderada) (Vaquera y cols., 2007).

Conconi,…) se sustentan en esfuerzos cíclicos y continuos (Mc Innes y cols., 1995;

tampoco sus velocidades umbral (73.3% en tapiz vs. 72.8% en TIVRE-Basket);

VALIDATION OF A FIELD TEST FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE
SPECIFIC RESISTANCE IN BASKETBALL (TIVRE-BASKET).
INTRODUCTION
Every time the technological applications are more used to value functional
capacities, to monitor and to control the effort and performance, to state his evolution
with the training, to detect lagoons in physical preparation, and even to receive and
select sports talents.
Basketball is a sport acyclic, intervalic and discontinuous that needs
simultaneously from the aerobic and anaerobic systems to realize maximum efforts
(sprints, jumps …) and submaximum (moderate running) (Vaquera et al., 2007). In him,
the aerobic metabolism is transcendent so much for his duration as because in him there
is sustained part of the recovery of the anaerobic actions. Nevertheless the values of
VO2max and/or of anaerobic threshold (indicator of aerobic resistance) are not so high
as in specialties of resistance (Sallet et al., 2005), although his evaluation by means of
laboratory test (treadmill) or field test (Course-Navette, Cooper, Conconi, …) sustain
themselves in cyclical and continuous efforts (Mc Innes et al., 1995; Vaquera et al.,
2007) that apply themselves of unspecific form in the basketball and generate doubts
about his transference to the control of the training.
For it, the object is to validate a specific field test, intervalic, progressively and
maximal, to realize in the basketball court (TIVRE-Basket), and that implies realizing
acyclic, discontinuous and intervallic efforts that they are those that they characterize to
the basketball. And that it allows valuing the specific resistance to the above mentioned

efforts, detecting the interval in which the anaerobic threshold is identified, his capacity
of recovery to the same ones and the VO2max according to the time of effort.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
There has developed the application TIVRE-Basket (Intervalic test for the
evaluation of the specific resistance in basketball) (Figure 1), consistent in place, up to
12 players, each one in a beacon placed in the court at a distance of 8 m, and to realize
an effort to the same rhythm (sonorous stimuli), specific (changes of rhythm and
direction) intervalic (to complete 3 returns to the circuit of 96 m followed by a recovery
break of 30 seg), progressive (one initiates 7.8 km/h and every interval increases in 0.6
km/h) and maximal (up to depletion).
18 professional basketball players (27.64±6.39 years, 89.74±3.60 kg of weight,
194.11±3.33 cm of size; 10.26±0.37 % of fat) with 5-12 years of national and
international experience in official competitions and national selections, they realized a
effort test in the treadmill (constant earring to 1% and protocol in ramp: initiate 6 km/h
and increases of 0.5 km/h every 30 seg up to the exhaustion), with cardio control and
gas analysis respiration to respiration (Med Graphics CPX-bonus) to identify the
VO2max stung and the anaerobic ventilatory threshold-VT2 (Mc Innes et al., 1995).
48-72 hours later they realized the TIVRE-Basket field test carrying a
pulsometer (Polar Vantage NV), and they analyzed the anaerobic threshold being
identified (ATi) when inflection is detected in the evolution of the MaxHR attending on
the methodology proposed by Probst (Vaquera et al., 2007).

DISCUSSION
The VO2max in treadmill was 54.1 ml/kg/min, which is in the status of
professional basketball players: 55-60 ml/kg/min (Sallet et al., 2005), coming to 98% of
his theoretical MaxHR, as with the test TIVRE-Basket, in which there is reached minor
maximum speed (17.58 vs. 14.2 km/h) by the biggest decreasing duration of the
intervals (from 2.2 min to 7.8 km/h up to 1.2 min to 14.2 km/h), although both correlate
speed very significantly (r=0.629; p <0.01) (Table 1). Also those who complete a major
number of intervals in the TIVRE-Basket should be those of more VO2max.
The anaerobic threshold values the capacity of resistance for works of median
(10-30 minutes) and gives duration (more than 30 minutes), being much used to value
charges of training and to know the level of physical condition. Only in 2 cases (89.9
%) this intervalic anaerobic threshold was not identified (Figure 1), which identifies in
the interval 5.2 , at a speed of 10.2 km/h, and to a heart rate of 176.5 bpm, that does not
differ significantly with that of the anaerobic threshold-VT2 in treadmill, like neither his
speeds threshold (73.3 % in treadmill vs. 72.8 % in TIVRE-Basket); happening to 74.5
% of the VO2max (Sallet et al., 2005).
The behavior so much of the maximum heart rate as of that of recovery in every
interval of effort of the TIVRE-Basket it presents significant differences (Figure 1B)
with the previous one only in the submaximum intervals, coinciding with the anaerobic

threshold, which has to be related to the training and performance, to the being an
aerobic sport with frequent anaerobic actions (Graham et al., 2003).
TIVRE-Basket proposes as a new indirect method of field test for the evaluation
of the aerobic quality, of non-invasive character and scarce cost.
