ENSAYO PRELIMINAR (EP) 1981

PRELIMINARY TRIAL (EP) 1981
January 1St - December 31
Introduction
The Preliminary Tri~l (EP : Ensayo Preliminar) is an annual nursery designed to evaluate advanced experimental lines of
dry beans developed by CIAT and national programs. All EP entries are selected from a previous Uniform Screening Nursery (VEF) (Figure 1) .
Objectives
1.
2.
3 .
Evaluate the reaction of advanced lines developed by CIAT and national programs to the main limiting fact ors of bean productivity.
Provide a source of improved genetic material t o select candidatcs for the IBYAN, IBRN, and other intcrnat ional nurseries.
Identify sources of germplasm for resistance to di sease and insect pests and other agronomic characters in the jmp rove d background for brceding purposes and direct use by national programs.
The EP nursery is evaluatcd primarily within Colombia, and also by collaborators from other countrics. Upon request, a l im ited qunntity of complete or partial sets is dístributed each year to nationa l program scientists and collaborators. All data receivcd by Decemhcr 31 are processed for selectíon of materials and pri nt ing of the EP catalogue. The present one ís the third in this series.
l~i seleccionados pa~a el EP.

Matcrials and Nethods
The 1981 EP consis ted of 190 test materi al~ s elected out cf 542 lines evaluated in the 1980 VEF (Table 1). Of these, 165 ~ere . climbing lines and 377 bush lines. Bush lines susceptible to bean common mosaic are not included in this catalogue. Of these, three
obtained from national programs, three from the CIAT germp losm bank
and the r emainder bred by CIAT befare December 1980 ~ere selected for the EP. All cnt ries were evaluated for various charactcrs by CIAT staff at severa! locations within Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Per6. Naterials were grouped according to their grain characteristics (color, size) and growth hab it (climbing and bus h) to be located within thc same international yield tria! (IBYAN)
(Table 2).
Estimates of yield were obtained from replicated trials conducted at CIAT farms at Palmira and Poparán. Climatic data about thcse sites are shown in Table 3. each 3 m. long with 3 replications. excluding the 0.5 m. head borders.
Each plot consi sted of 3 roHs The net plot size was 3.6 m2
,
The trials were conducted under
two level s of inputs : low and high. Screening for disease and insect pests was carried out in the field screcnhouse, and/or ¡tlasshouse. Di scase nurscries for common bacteria! blight, rust, anthracnose and angular leaf spot in the field were inoculated with a mixture of isolates of the pathogen)s) collected from previous nu Tseries grown at the same location. Data on web bli~ht, leafhopper we re obtained from natural incidence in the field nurseries.

Visual appreciation of overall field performance of bean lines. On a scale of 1 to S : 1 indicates a test ·material with no adaptational deficiency whatsoever, physiological or otherwise, with a yielding ability of 4 tons or more of dry beans per hectare; and S a 1ack of adaptation due to one or more major factors leading to verr little
or no grain yield. The latter could be due to susceptibility or sensitivitt to individual or combination of factors such as photoperiod, temperature, drought, diseases, insect pests , adverse soil conditions, etc. The two principal components namely ve~ctative vigour and the pod load are greatly influcnced by the seed size, growth habit, and maturit¡ of
individual bean lines and these are ta~en into consideration while evaluating bean germplasm for their adaptation.

Evaluations were made at CIAT-Palmira. Plants were inoculatcd using two razor blades mountcd on a wooden handle which were then used to make two cuts in a leaflet placed on a sponpe soakcd in a bacteria! cel l suspension. Readings wcre made 10 dars after the inoculation. Plant reactions wpre recorded accord ing to thc follo~in* scale : 1 = inmune or hi~hly resistant; 2 ~ resistant; 3 R intermediate; 4 e susceptible ; S • hir.hlt susceptib l e.
13. Roya

13. Rust

Evaluations were made at CIAT -Palmi ra where a large infec tion was observed on susceptible checks. Two cri teria were cons idered ' • for evaluation :
I. disease intensity expressed as percentage of leaf a rea cove red by rust pustules; and
II. type of pustule, whi ch was divided into five classes :
