1.- ENSAYO: Análisis Crítico del cap. 1 "The Sweet Spot" del libro: THE TALENT CODE, del
autor Daniel Coyle. http://thetalentcode.com/excerpt/
IS TALENT BORN OR GROWN.pdf
IS TALENT BORN OR GROWN?
Coyle, David (2009) THE TALENT CODE. Greatness isn’t born. It’s grown. Here’s how (Chapter 1: “The Sweet Spot”).
Reaching the perfection has been always desirable in all the fields in which human being has participated. Over the years and around the world, there have been hundreds of talented people in differen’t fields such as: sport, art, science, etc. We have great Brazilian soccer players, wonderful Russian gymnasts, ancient Greek philosophers. What does make them get successful? What is the secret of their talent? Is the talent born or is it grown? Daniel Coyle, a contributing editor for Outside Magazine and two-time National Magazine Award finalist, explains in his book The Talent Code, why talent is isn’t born. It’s grown.
In is book Coyle points out that talent is a result of a special combination of certain factors in a person or group of persons which, together a kind of training process, results in the effective achievement of the objective set. He calls this training process, the deep practice. This practice lets people go to the edges of their abilities and then beyond. The author calls this point The Sweet Spot.
Coyle quotes many stories from a journey which took him to small, dirty and humble places in different cities from different countries to support his basic argument, in particular, about how Brazil produces so great and successful soccer players, he explains how a soccer coach, Simon Clifford, go to Brazil to find the secret of the revolutionary training process of a future talented soccer player. To support his idea, the author also presents several examples of Bjroks studies, who has said: “We think of effortless performance as desirable, but it’s really a terrible way of learning” (18).
Coyle argues that deep practice is a strange concept for two main reasons: The first of them is that this kind of practice cuts against out intuition about talent. It is, a result of a continuous practice, and the second one is that it is related to events that we normally avoid doing in our life. They are called mistakes, but even they are not value, the autor puts them as the opportunities which become skills. Coyle’s idea about how mistakes become clever to pleople, is well explained in Edwin Link’s unusual device case, the story about the son of a piano and organ maker from Binghampton, New York; a skinny, beak-nose, an epically stubborn, who was a tinkerer by nature and built a trainer device to teach pilots to fly against the adverse climate at a time when brave and trained pilots were dying not for fighting in wars but for flying under weather bad conditions..
When Coyle started visiting talent hotbeds, he met what he was expecting and even more. He witnessed how Brunio, an eleven years old worked on a new soccer move on a concrete playground in Sao Paulo Brazil. Coyle also shares Jenny’s story, a twenty-four singer from Dallas, Texas, who after missing a note, stopped and returned to beginning until she was able to sing the measure perfectly. These stories are excellent examples of how a deep practice together the correction of mistakes make people get the excellence.
During the presentation of Robert Bjorks examples and Edwin Link’s story, Coyles focuses on the importance of errors to the learning process. At this point I wonder how about the importance of the role of the coach or the teacher during the learning process? Is it important or not a well qualified trainer?
I agree with the author about the talent is grown through a combination of factors in additon to a deep practice, but I think that a talented person needs something else. It is, a natural special ability (Howe) to really gets a talent.
How can we really convinced that Coyles’ arguments and evidences are enough to assert that talent isn’t born but isn’t grown? For readers looking to get a good overview of how the talent can be reached, this book is a must read.
Thanks for reading,
Alma Leticia

COEVALUACIÓN REALIZADA POR DOS COMPAÑEROS PARTICIPANTES DEL CURSO.
Note: this section can only be filled out during the evaluation phase. Where in the essay does the author show summary and understanding of Coyle's chapter? Is that sufficient to convey Coyle's main argument to readers who may not have read Coyle? peer 1 → Author summaries the Coyle's Chapter in 3rd and 4th paragraph. Yes it is . Author wrote it very well. In all three assignments. I like this assignment most. Perfect flow of writing. peer 2 → Second paragraph Where does the author demonstrate understanding of key definitions of Coyle's text, such as "deep practice," "scaffolding," or "chicken wire Harvards"? peer 1 → Author has a clear understanding of Coyle's text. But he introduce th econcept of deep practice in 2nd paragraph peer 2 → Second paragraph Where does the author go beyond summary of the text to pose a question about Coyle's text, raise a limitation about Coyle's argument, or make some other point about Coyle's article? peer 1 → In 3rd last paragraph where author raise question about the role of teacher in the learning process. peer 2 → Last two paragraphs Summarize in a sentence or two what the writer is arguing, if you can. If you cannot, say what the writer might do to make the argument more clear. peer 1 → Author needs to add more in the evaluation part peer 2 → Writer argues the importance of qualified trainer / Coach is overlooked. What evidence does the writer draw on to support or explicate his or her argument? Has the writer effectively integrated and cited quotes or evidence? If not, say what the writer might do to integrate and cite quotes or evidence more effectively. peer 1 → Author uses Bjork's quotes to support his/her argument. But author didn't use Simon Clifford argument "It was like finding the missing link". I think it would be a supporting evidence for finding the answer of Talent which is deep practice. peer 2 → Writer suggest that this point has been missed or over looked by Coyle. Do you see unconventional features in the writing (spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, and so on) that interfere with reading? Identify in particular one of these features so the writer can focus on it for his or her revision. peer 1 → Yes i found two spelling mistakes i.e autor (In line 18 it should be author) , pleople (in line 19) , Bjroks's (it should be Bjork's) and Howe (Hope) in the 2nd last paragraph
peer 2 → No. What did you like best about this essay? peer 1 → Writing flow peer 2 → Well structured essay. What did you learn about your own writing / your own project based on responding to this writer's project? peer 1 → I learnt that i can improve my writing after reading such well written essay. peer 2 → Structure of essay.

Texto 1: Jóvenes Mexicanos en peligro. http://letycoursera.blogspot.mx/
YOUNG MEXICAN PEOPLE ARE AT RISK!! Mexico ranks first place in childhood obesity and the second place in adults, just after United States. According to ENSANUTD (Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición) in Mexico one in three teenagers between 12 and 19 years old are overweight or obese. It represents just a little bit more than 5 million of children and teenagers living with this problem, who face day by day the healthy problems associated with this sick, obesity. (1)
Several diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are killing our teenagers and young adult people every day. In the last 2012, diabetes associated with obesity was the main cause of deaths in Mexico. The diseases caused by the high consumption of fast food and sugay drinks are a very serious healthy problem, if we don’t do anything now Mexico will have a very sick population in just some more years, causing very strong social and economical problems, it’s time to do something. Obesity comes from the latin word “obesus” which means “person who has so much fat in his body”. Traditionaly obesity is defined as an extra weight, more than 20% of the normal weight, according to the subject’s age and height. This extra weight is the result of high consumptions of calories, more than our body really needs. It is true that genetic and hereditary factors have a strong influence, but the main problems are in our bad eating habits, socioeconomic and psychological factors, sedentary, among others. Dr. Jesus Montoya Ramirez, bariatric physician in charge of the Clinical Management of Obesity Multidisciplinary National Medical Center "20 de Noviembre" ISSSTE, said that “around 80% of the obese teenagers, will be in the same condition for the rest of their lives; less than 5% of adults who lose weight keep in their normal weight the next 5 years after a treatment, and 6% recover the lost weight in the next 6–12 months” (2)
