4. How do grid references helpme to find places?
You mght have notced by now that a 1:25 000 scale Ordnance Survey map s covered n aseres of blue grd lnes. These grd lnes helpyou to pnpont an exact locaton anywhere onthe map by gvng a unque number known asa grd reference. The vertcal lnes are calledeastngs, snce they ncrease n value as youtravel east on the map. The horzontal lnesare called northngs, snce they ncrease nvalue as you travel north on the map.
Four-figure grid references
A four-igure grd reference s a handy way ofdentfyng any square on a map. Grd referencesare easy f you can remember that you alwayshave to go along the corrdor before you go upthe stars. To ind the number of a square irstuse the eastngs to go along the corrdor untl
you come to the bottom left-hand corner of thesquare you want. Wrte ths two-igure numberdown. Then use the northng to go up the starsuntl you ind the same corner. Put ths two-igurenumber after your irst one and you now have thefour-igure grd reference, whch looks lke ths:
