Ecdótica se aplicaba a la investigación de la composición, revisión y publicación de obras individuales, que a menudo presentan múltiples formas variantes, con el objetivo de producir una historia ordenada del texto, un texto de lectura y un aparato confiable. <w n="29">of</w> <w n="30">the</w> <w n="31">embryo,</w> <w n="32">or</w> <w n="33">at</w> <w n="34">the</w> <w n="35">instant</w> <w n="36">of</w> <w n="37">conception.</w> </ab><ab n="200" id="CH1-200-200-1859"><w n="1">Geoffroy</w> <w n="2">St.</w> <w n="3">Hilaire's</w> <w n="4">experiments</w> <w n="5">show</w> <w n="6">that</w> <w n="7">unnatural</w> <w n="8">treatment</w> <w n="9">of</w> <w n="10">the</w> <w n="11">embryo</w> <w n="12">causes</w> <w n="13">monstrosities;</w> <w n="14">and</w> <w n="15">monstrosities</w> <w n="16">cannot</w> <w n="17">be</w> <w n="18">separated</w> <w n="19">by</w> <w n="20">any</w> <w n="21">clear</w> <w n="22">line</w> <w n="23">of</w> <w n="24">distinction</w> <w n="25">from</w> <w n="26">mere</w> <w n="27">variations.</w> </ab><ab n="300" id="CH1-200-300-1859"><w n="1">But</w> <w n="2">I</w> <w n="3">am</w> <w n="4">strongly</w> <w n="5">inclined</w> <w n="6">to</w> <w n="7">suspect</w> <w n="27">affected</w> <w n="28">prior</w> <w n="29">to</w> <w n="30">the</w> <w n="31">act</w> <w n="32">of</w> <w n="33">conception.</w> </ab><ab n="400" id="CH1-200-400-1859"><w n="1">Several</w> <w n="2">reasons</w> <w n="3">make</w> <w n="4">me</w> <w n="5">believe</w> <w n="6">in</w> <w n="7">this;</w> <w n="8">but</w> <w n="9">the</w> <w n="10">chief</w> <w n="11">one</w> <w n="12">is</w> <w n="22">the</w> <w n="23">functions</w> <w n="24">of</w> <w n="25">the</w> <w n="26">reproductive</w> <w n="27">system;</w> <w n="28">this</w> <w n="29">system</w> <w n="30">appearing</w> <w n="31">to</w> <w n="32">be</w> <w n="33">far</w> <w n="34">more</w> <w n="35">susceptible</w> <w n="36">than</w> <w n="37">any</w> <w n="38">other</w> <w n="39">part</w> <w n="40">of</w> <w n="41">the</w> <w n="42">organisation,</w> <w n="43">to</w> <w n="44">the</w> <w n="45">action</w> <w n="46">of</w> <w n="47">any</w> <w n="48">change</w> <w n="49">in</w> <w n="50">the</w> <w n="51">conditions</w> <w n="52">of</w> <w n="53">life.</w> </ab><ab n="500" id="CH1-200-500-1859"><w n="1">Nothing</w> <w n="2">is</w> <w n="3">more</w> <w n="4">easy</w> <w n="5">than</w> <w n="26">the</w> <w n="27">many</w> <w n="28">cases</w> <w n="29">when</w> <w n="30">the</w> <w n="31">male</w> <w n="32">and</w> <w n="33">female</w> <w n="34">unite.</w> </ab><ab n="600" n="10">though</w> <w n="11">living</w> <w n="12">long</w> <w n="13">under</w> <w n="14">not</w> <w n="15">very</w> <w n="16">close</w> <w n="17">confinement</w> <w n="18">in</w> <w n="19">their</w> <w n="16">vigour,</w> <w n="17">and</w> <w n="18">yet</w> <w n="19">rarely</w> <w n="20">or</w> <w n="21">never</w> <w n="22">seed!</w> </ab><ab n="800" id="CH1-200-800-1859"><w n="1">In</w> <w
