no tant als protagonistes individuals
competitivitat

Open Innovation
Closed innovation Open innovation
can be described as: combining internal and external ideas as well as internal
and external paths to market to advance the development of new technologies.
Chesbrough, H. (2003), "Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology", Harvard Business School Press.
15
Closed innovation principles
The smart people in the field work for us
To profit from R&D, we must discover it, develop it, and ship it ourselves
If we discover it ourselves, we will get it to the market first
The company that gets an innovation to the market first will win
If we create the most and the best ideas in the industry, we will win
We should control our IP, so that our competitors don't profit from our ideas
Open innovation principles
Not all the smart people in the field work for us. We need to work with smart people inside and outside the company
External R&D can create significant value: internal R&D is needed to claim some portion of that value
We don't have to originate the research to profit from it
Building a better business model is better than getting to the market first
If we make the best use of internal and external ideas, we will win
We should profit from others' use of our IP, and we should buy others' IP whenever it advances our business model
Open Innovation
16
Technology Push: Looking for a Problem
17
Platform of Innovation - Vision
The most beneficial impact is derived when biomedical applications of
modern technology are driven by clinical needs
• not by “technology push”
fit into the context of clinical practice and meet the demands of patients‟ and
clinician‟s daily lives
Clinicians or technologists with a potential paradigm-changing concept…
• typically does not possess the skills or the resources to surmount all the
obstacles of
• moving from bench to bedside, ultimate dissemination, and commercialization
Too many promising concepts wither from lack of experience with the
requisite tasks of the full translational-research process

Invention is a random and unpredictable process
Innovation is a manageable process that results in something of commercial value
Innovation is also about creating new ways of doing things
• Example, developing innovations that improve our processes and reduce their cost
• Reducing ambulance transport to the hospital for patients that have to be trained to
recover from a brain attack in a hospital that makes thousands of visits per year is
huge
25
27
Every hospital has unique problems
• Sometimes easier to identify than to change
• Building processes from within, not dictating change
• Creating value from the power and ability of our staff
• Obtaining results through empowerment, guidance and focus on goals
• But, we don‟t do it alone
> It‟s not our process, it‟s your‟s
• It‟s engaging our staff, their leadership
• Taking their ideas and redefining direction
• Setting a plan that will work, and then putting it all together
• Innovation development in Sant Pau will require new capabilities and new types of
staff to play these roles
28
L‟innovació
La mayoría de las innovaciones fracasan
Las empresas sin innovación fracasan
