Padre Nuestro
Padre nuestro,
que estás en el cielo,
santificado sea tu nombre;
venga a nosotros tu reino;
hágase tu voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
perdona nuestras ofensas,
como también nosotros perdonamos
a los que nos ofenden;
no nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén.
Ave María
Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;

In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

Our Father
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Oraciones Básicas
Gloria
Gloria al Padre,
y al Hijo,
y al Espíritu Santo:
como era en el principio,
ahora, y siempre,
fue crucificado, muerto y sepultado;
descendió a los infiernos;
al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos;

Glory Be
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty:
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

A ti llamamos
los desterrados hijos de Eva;
a ti suspiramos,
vuelve a nosotros esos tus ojos misericordiosos;

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope:
to thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve;

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,

Santa Madre de Dios;
no desprecies las súplicas que te dirigimos
en nuestras necesidades;
antes bien, líbranos siempre
de todo peligro,
¡oh Virgen gloriosa y bendita!
Acto de Contrición
Por haber elegido hacer el mal
y fallado en hacer el bien,
te he ofendido a ti,
Nuestro Salvador, Jesucristo,
sufrió y murió por nosotros;

and these thy gifts,

Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Under Your Protection (the oldest prayer to the Virgin Mary)
We fly to thy protection,
O holy Mother of God.
Despise not our petitions
in our necessities,
but deliver us always
from all dangers
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Act of Contrition
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong
and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you,
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help:
to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior, Jesus Christ,
suffered and died for us;
in his name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

Oración antes de Acostarse
Visita, Señor, esta habitación:
aleja de ella las insidias del enemigo;
Donde haya odio, ponga yo amor;
donde haya ofensa, perdón;
donde haya duda, fe;
donde haya desesperación, esperanza;
donde haya tinieblas, luz;
donde haya tristeza, alegría.
Oh Señor, que no busque yo tanto
ser consolado, como consolar;
ser comprendido, como comprender;

Prayer before Going to Bed
Lord, we beg you to visit this house
and banish from it
all the deadly power of the enemy.
May your holy angels dwell here
to keep us in peace,
and may your blessing be upon us always.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Prayer Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled, as to console;

to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and
it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Ayúdame a
Si no estás seguro, haz
no te olvides.

How to Confess Well
It is possible to sin in thought, word, deed, or
omission. Confessing our sins and receiving
absolution gives us freedom and the grace of God, to
help us leave sin behind and live a better life.
Prayer before Confession Come, Holy Spirit, into my soul and help me to know
my sins, feel sorry for them, and confess them
humbly, so that I may be able to enjoy the Father’s
forgiveness. By your light, illumine the darkness of
my mind; by your fire, warm my cold heart; by your
grace, fill me with your love and power. May I
realize the wrong that I have done and the good that
I have failed to do. Help me to feel truly sorry for all
my sins, strengthen my determination to avoid them
in the future; help me to live in your love, your
peace, and your joy. Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
How to Make a Good Confession 1. Prepare well beforehand by praying and making a
good examination of conscience.
2. Confess your sins honestly to the priest and be sure
to ask for help if you need it – he wants to help you.
3. If you have any mortal sins, be sure to say how
many times you committed each sin. If you aren’t
sure, do your best to guess how many times or how
often it would have been.
4. Listen carefully to the penance that you are given
and take care to complete it as soon as possible af-
terwards, so that you don’t forget.
5. Thank God for his mercy and love!

hiciste. Si no sabes exactamente cuántas veces, puedes adivinar
— pero ¡una buena conjetura, con honestidad!

How to Confess Well
What is a mortal sin?
For a sin to be mortal, three conditions are required:
1. It involves grave matter.
2. It is committed with full knowledge that it is grave matter.
3. It is committed with deliberate consent (with full freedom).
We read in the New Testament, in the First Letter of St. John,
“God will give...life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is
sin which is mortal... All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin
which is not mortal.” (1 Jn 5:16-17). Thus St. John distin-
guishes between two types of sin: those which lead to spiritual
death (mortal sins) and those which do not lead to spiritual
death (venial sins).
What is “grave matter”?
“Grave matter” are those things that seriously or gravely harm
ourselves, others, or God. For example, we know that it is
always a sin to lie, but not all lies are grave (or serious); some
are big and some are small. On the other hand, there are
certain sins that always have grave matter as their object: for
example, the sin of killing an innocent person. That is to say,
certain things can be grave matter, but are not always; and
certain things are always grave matter.
To be a mortal sin, the three conditions listed above are
required. That is to say that, if it is a grave matter, but the
person did not know it through no fault of his/her own, it was
not a mortal sin. Or, if it was grave matter and the person
knew it, but he/she sinned while very tired or under pressure,
then he/she did not have full freedom; it was not a mortal sin.
If the person did not complete all of the three conditions, it was
not a mortal sin. Or, if the sin had to do with light matter (not
grave), then it was not a mortal sin. Sins which are not
mortal are venial.
The Church teaches that we must confess all mortal sins by
name and number. That is to say: what you did, and how many
times you did it. If you don’t know exactly how many times, you
can guess — but a good, honest guess!

pecados. Ya no somos culpables. No obstante, aún

Indulgences
Definition
An indulgence is the lessening or complete
remission of the temporal punishment due to sins
that have already been forgiven.
Explanation
There are two consequences to every sin that we
commit. One is guilt and the other is temporal
punishment.
When we confess our sins and are sorry for them,
God forgives the guilt of those sins. We are no long-
er guilty. However, we still owe a debt for those
sins. We are still required to repair the damage that
our sins caused in the world. We are required to
make reparation for those sins. Another way of say-
ing it is: there is a punishment or pain for sin. This
is called “temporal punishment”.
A good example of this concept of “temporal
punishment” is when a young person is playing
baseball and hits a ball through a neighbor’s win-
dow. Now he is guilty of damaging the neighbor’s
property. The teenager summons the courage to ask
forgiveness of the neighbor, and the neighbor,
thinking about his own youth when he did
something similar, pardons the teenager from the
heart. But even though he is forgiven, the
consequence remains that the teenager has to pay
from his savings for the repair of the window!

llevar a cabo. Si cumplimos la tarea y llevamos a
cabo los requisitos, ganamos la indulgencia. Dicha

Indulgences
Indulgences are gifts or pardons that the Church
offers us in order to lessen the temporal punishment
that we owe for the sins that we have committed. In
order to receive these gifts from the Church, she
gives us a task to complete and various conditions to
carry out. If we complete the task and carry out the
required conditions, we gain the indulgence. This
indulgence either wipes away all the temporal
punishment we owe, or reduces it.
Types of Indulgences
There are two types of indulgences: Plenary and
Partial. Plenary indulgences free us from all of the
temporal punishment due to the sins we have
committed up until that time. Partial indulgences
free us from some of the temporal punishment due to
sins.
Normally, a person may gain one plenary
indulgence per day, and it is possible to gain
multiple partial indulgences each day.

otorgarnos indulgencias a nosotros.
to le dio.
maravilloso!

The Church’s Authority to Grant Indulgences
What our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us is
immeasurable. The result of his work of redemption
on the Cross was an immense Treasury of Graces.
Even his works of healing, preaching, and teaching
while he still walked the earth began to build up this
Treasury. Additionally, the Blessed Virgin Mary
has contributed to this Treasury of Graces by her
good works throughout her life and the way she
cooperated with God’s plan of salvation. The saints
also have contributed to this Treasury of Graces by
their good works and charity.
Christ entrusted to the Church this Treasury of
Graces. Our Holy Father, the Pope, who is the Vicar
of Christ on earth and has been given the keys to the
Kingdom of Heaven and the power to bind and loose
(Matthew 16:19) , can draw upon this Treasury of
Graces and grant indulgences to us.
When our Holy Father grants an indulgence to us,
he acts with the spiritual authority given to him by
Christ. It is also an act of charity and compassion
toward us. He grants an indulgence to us because
he loves us and he wants to encourage us to continue
on our path toward heaven.
Truly, an indulgence is a wonderful gift!

You can obtain indulgences for yourself or for
someone who is in Purgatory. Any indulgence can
be given to those in Purgatory, but there is also one
plenary and one partial indulgence that you can only
gain for those who are in Purgatory (that is, you
cannot gain it for yourself).
Plenary: On any or each day from November 1st to
the 8th, devoutly visit a cemetery and pray for the
departed.
Partial: Visit a cemetery and pray for the
deceased, any day of the year.
