Conferencia del DLT invitado por IEE COMSOC PERU – Ph. D. Ekram Hossain: 15 nov. 2013 “Redes inalámbricas celulares, cognitivas y de multinivel: Evolución hacia la 5G”
Resumen: La arquitectura de varios niveles con células pequeñas, como las femtoceldas , picocélulas ,
macrocélulas y metroceldas , superpuestas con las macrocéldas tradicionales se están desarrollando para
mejorar la cobertura y la capacidad de la próxima generación de redes inalámbricas celulares (4G, 5G y
posteriores). Además, en este tipo de redes de múltiples niveles , los conceptos de radiocomunicaciones
inteligentes serán utilizados por estas pequeñas células para mejorar la utilización del espectro
radioeléctrico. Sin embargo , el despliegue de pequeñas células en una arquitectura celular de varios niveles
plantean diversos retos, entre los cuales tenemos la gestión de recursos (es decir , gestión de interferencia,
control de potencia, control de admisión, balanceo de carga ) como el más importante. Esta conferencia
ofrecerá una visión general sobre el problema de la gestión de recursos de radio en redes de células
pequeñas 5G considerando células CDMA y OFDMA, y revisará el estado actual de este tema. Finalmente, se
indicarán los diversos retos a los cuales se encaminan y las direcciones futuras de investigación que se
pondrían orientar.
Title: Multi-tier and Cognitive Cellular Wireless Networks: Evolution Towards 5G
Abstract: Multi-tier architecture with small cells such as femtocells, picocells, microcells, and
metrocells, overlaid with traditional macrocells is being developed to improve the network coverage
and capacity of the next generation (beyond 4G and 5G) cellular wireless networks. Also, in such multi-
tier networks, cognitive radio concepts will be used by these small cells to improve the radio spectrum
utilization. However, deployment of small cells in a multi-tier cellular architecture poses many
challenges among which resource management (i.e., interference management, power control,
admission control, load balancing) is the most significant one. This lecture will provide an overview on
the radio resource management problem in 5G small cell networks considering both CDMA and OFDMA
small cells, and review the state-of-the-art research on this topic. To this end, several important open
research challenges and future research directions will be outlined.

Ekram Hossain is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of
Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Victoria,

Canada, in 2001. Dr. Hossain's current research interests include design, analysis, and optimization of
wireless/mobile communications networks, cognitive radio systems, and network economics.
He has authored/edited several books in these areas. Dr. Hossain currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief
for the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, an Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in
Communications - Cognitive Radio Series and IEEE Wireless Communications. Also, he serves on the
IEEE Press Editorial Board (for the term 2013-2015). Previously, he served as the Area Editor for the
IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in the area of ``Resource Management and Multiple
Access'' from 2009-2011 and an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing from 2007-
2012.
Dr. Hossain has won several research awards including the University of Manitoba Merit Award in 2010
(for Research and Scholarly Activities), the 2011 IEEE Communications Society Fred Ellersick Prize
Paper Award, and the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference 2012 (WCNC'12)
Best Paper Award. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society for the term
2012-2013. Dr. Hossain is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Manitoba, Canada.
