I. INTRODUCCION.
La actividad investigadora de la UEX se ve reflejada en diferentes tipos de publicaciones
científicas, como artículos de revistas, libros, tesis, congresos, etc. Estas publicaciones son
recogidas sistemáticamente en algunas bases de datos bibliográficas internacionales que
tienen como objetivo la difusión de la Ciencia y facilitar la búsqueda y localización de
documentación publicada sobre cualquier disciplina científica. Estas herramientas disponen de
unos cada vez más sofisticados motores de búsqueda que nos permiten realizar estudios
bibliométricos sobre la producción científica de instituciones, autores, áreas y revistas, en
aspectos como la visibilidad internacional, la repercusión o impacto, la colaboración, etc, muy
útiles para detectar y evaluar la investigación de calidad.
Para este informe se han utilizado dos de las más prestigiosas bases de datos de información
bibliográfica en la actualidad, WOK (Web of Knowledge) y SCOPUS, accesibles mediante
suscripción institucional desde la página web del Servicio de Bibliotecas de la UEX.
Web of Knowledge es el portal de información científica que contiene los conocidos listados
de revistas con Factor de Impacto, los JCR (Journal Citation Reports), elaborados desde los
años 70 del siglo pasado por el Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), actualmente
perteneciente al grupo editorial Thompson. Recoge unas 10.000 revistas internacionales,
aunque con una clara predominancia del mundo anglosajón.
Scopus es la alternativa que diseñó hace tan solo unos años la editorial Elsevier en
colaboración con otras editoriales, y que elabora sus propios indicadores bibliométricos, como
el SJR (Scimago Journal Ranking) y el Snip. Recoge información de unas 20.000 revistas, lo que
le supone ser la mayor base de datos bibliográfica del mundo actualmente y su procedencia es
más equilibrada en cuanto a procedencia geográfica de las revistas y en cuanto a cobertura
temática.
Estas dos bases de datos realizan un importante trabajo de selección de sus fuentes, pero
hay que aclarar que no representan en la misma proporción a todas las disciplinas científicas,
siendo menor el porcentaje en áres como las Ciencias Sociales y las Humanidades. Esto es
importante pues habrá una parte de la producción científica de la UEX que no se verá recogida
en estas herramientas y por lo tanto queda fuera también de este análisis que presentamos.

2. METODOLOGIA
Para la recogida de datos se han llevado a cabo una serie de búsquedas bibliograficas en las
bases de datos Web of Science (perteneciente al portal WOK) y Scopus.
La estrategia de búsqueda se ha basado en localizar todos los registros bibliográficos que
cumplían con la condición de tener a la Universidad de Extremadura como institución a la que
pertenece al menos alguno de los autores firmantes de cada publicación. Esto es posible
porque los registros bibliográficos de ambas bases de datos cuentan con un campo que recoge
la afiliación institucional de los autores. En el caso de Scopus se hace utilizando la pestaña de
su motor de búsqueda “Affiliation Search”, y en Web of Science seleccionando el campo
Address en el selector de campos de su buscador.
Las búsquedas fueron realizadas en marzo de 2013. Dado que estas bases de datos se
actualizan frecuentemente, los resultados obtenidos pueden variar ligeramente en futuras
búsquedas.
El total de documentos recuperados en las búsquedas ha sido de 8.896 en WOK y 8.893 en
Scopus para el periodo 1973-2012. Como se puede ver en el gráfico, el aumento de las
publicaciones de la UEX en ambos portales ha ido en constante aumento.

3. TABLAS.
