• Generacion 1: Voz Analogica

(a) Frequencies are not reused in adjacent cells.
(b) To add more users, smaller cells can be used.

Requirements of the new Cellular Requirements of the new Cellular StandardStandard
Primary
• There should be several network operators in each country. This should lead to the tariff and service provisioning competition.
• The system must be an open system - containing well defined interfaces between different system parts.
• GSM networks must be built without causing any major changes to the already existing Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN).
Other Requirements
• Pan European
• Good speech quality
• Efficient use of radio frequencies
• High capacity.
• Compatible with ISDN
• Compatible with other data communication specifications.
• Maintain good security for subscriber and transmitted information.

Advantages of GSMAdvantages of GSM
• GSM uses radio frequencies efficiently, and, due to the digital radio path, the system tolerates more inter cell disturbances.
• The average quality of speech achieved is better than in existing analogue systems.
• Data transmission is supported throughout the system.
• Speech is encrypted and subscriber information security is guaranteed.
• Due to the ISDN compatibility, new services are offered compared to the analogue systems.
• International roaming is technically possible within all the countries concerned.
• The large market toughens the competition and lowers the prices both for investments and usage.

• MSC/VLR area is divided into small areas called Location Area.
• A subscriber can move within this area without having to make a normal location update
• The maximum size of LA can be one MSC area and the minimum size is one cell.
• Paging is done in all cells of the LA where the subscriber is currently located
• LAI = MCC + MNC + LAC
LAI = Location Area Identity
MCC = Mobile Country Code
MNC = Mobile Network Code

Location updateLocation update
• The Mobile Station monitors the information broadcast by the network.
• The Mobile Station stores the current location area identity in the SIM card.
• The Mobile Station continues to monitor the broadcast information.
• If the location area identity being broadcast by the network is other than the one stored in SIM, the Mobile Station starts the location update procedure.

HandoversHandovers
• Handover due to traffic reasons• When capacity of cell nears maximum, Mobile stations in the periphery of the cell maybe
handed over to neighbouring cell with lower traffic load.
• MSC starts the procedure
• Handover due to Signal quality and strength• When a Mobile subscriber is moving during a call, he may travel from one cell to another.
• Frequency resources of previous cells can not be used any more.
• The mobile Station is handed over to the new cell.
• BSC controlling the current cell makes the decision to perform a handover.
• There are four types of these hand overs

Summary of SS7 - Part 1Summary of SS7 - Part 1
• Signalling is the transfer of information between subscriber interface points and the network and between different network elements to help establish a call.
• Signalling Information is interchanged as standard sets of messages which was developed and standardised in to the present SS7 system..
• GSM networks need non call related signalling which is possible with SS7.
• The SS7 used in PSTN networks is not sufficient to fulfil the signalling requirements of GSM networks, thus new protocols specific to GSM were developed.
CTXX1298/2.0 en 19 06/05/98 Sushil Gyanwali Copyright Nokia Telecommunications
Summary of SS7 - Part 2Summary of SS7 - Part 2
• MTP is the basis of SS7, and it is responsible for transferring of signalling messages form one element to another within the same signalling network
• TUP/ISUP are the user parts of MTP which handle call control.
• SCCP is needed for virtual connections and connectionless signalling
• BSSAP is used for signalling between MSC-BSC and MSC-MS
• MAP is needed for signalling between NSS elements

Third-Generation Mobile Phones:Third-Generation Mobile Phones:Digital Voice and DataDigital Voice and Data
Basic services a 3G network should provide
• High-quality voice transmission
• Messaging (replace e-mail, fax, SMS, chat, etc.)
• Multimedia (music, videos, films, TV, etc.)
• Internet access (web surfing, w/multimedia.)
WCDMA

(OFDM)
● (Referenias sobre FDM, CDMA y OFDM en:
http://www.tml.tkk.fi/Studies/Tik-110.300/1999/Wireless/modulation_3.html)
