Taught entirely in Spanish, Advanced Grammar and Composition, is a gateway course for all
students who wish to take upper-level Spanish classes. The new online format will enhance student
acquisition of second-language skills by rationalizing the use of time and resources, maximizing
the potential for individualized learning, and expanding the range and real-world connection of
skills acquired and texts produced. This format will also allow a strong focus on collaborative
writing and teamwork skills, as well as providing individual help and guidance for all students.
a nivel individual y colectivo.
Note: Should you have any questions or issues about the course that might not be resolved directly

PARTICIPACIÓN (20%): All materials must be studied in advance; students are responsible for
completing all assignments. Students are expected to participate electronically in chats and
discussions at least four times per week. Students will discuss a reading that corresponds to the
chapter and post the first draft of the taller de escritores in order to obtain feedback before
submitting the final version to the instructor. Participation will be divided into online participation
in course discussions and voice recordings of a weekly journal.
Online-Participation will be graded according to the following criteria based on 4 major items:
timeliness, quality of initial post, written expression, and response to classmates.
(A) Initial posting made before Wednesday 11:59PM and at least two responses to
classmates made well in advance of Saturday 11:59PM deadline; discussion postings
display an excellent understanding of the grammatical aspects and topics reviewed in class
and is well-edited; written responses are largely free of grammatical, spelling and
punctuation errors and display an impressive range of vocabulary due to the style of writing
that facilitates communication; responses to at least two classmates per discussion are
thoughtful and offer metalinguistic feedback that suggest modifications regarding content,
vocabulary, grammar, and writing style in order to advance the discussion.
(B) Initial posting made after Wednesday 11:59PM but responses to classmates made
before Saturday 11:59PM deadline; discussion postings display an understanding of the
grammatical aspects and topics reviewed in class and not well-edited; written responses
show some grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors; responses to at least two
classmates per discussion offers some feedback but does not suggest modifications Tentat

regarding content, vocabulary, grammar, and writing style in order to advance the
discussion.
(C) Either initial posting or comments made before Saturday 11:59PM deadline; discussion
postings display correct information but does not use expressions, grammatical aspects and
topics reviewed in class and does not make connections between ideas; written responses
are difficult to understand due to many grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors;
response to only one classmate per discussion with some feedback suggesting some
modifications regarding content, vocabulary, grammar, and writing style in order to
advance de discussion.
(D-F) Initial posting and comments made after Saturday 11:59 PM deadline; discussion
postings show little or no evidence that grammatical aspects and topics were evaluated or
understood as postings are incomplete sentences and ideas do not flow; written responses
are difficult to understand due to the high number of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation
errors; no responses to classmates.

University and Course Procedures and Policies
The following webpage provides a uniform presentation of policies to all UMD students:
http://www.ugst.umd.edu/courserelatedpolicies.html. The page also includes links to resources
related to each policy.
1. Placement: Must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in SPAN207. The Spanish
Department adheres to a strict placement policy and must have proof that you are in the correct
level. The Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT) is an online exam designed to place students
in the appropriate foreign language course (especially language/culture courses at the 100 and 200-
level). See: http://www.arhu.umd.edu/undergraduate/flpt. All students who have not taken a
language class prior to course registration for Spring 2014 are required to take the FLPT unless
they have
(1) received a high enough AP or IB score to meet the prerequisite for the course he/she plans
to take and has sent the scores to UMD and there is
(2) transcript evidence of the pre-requisite college course work for the course they plan to take.
2. Virtual Classroom Climate: The University of Maryland values the diversity of its student
body and is committed to providing a virtual classroom atmosphere that encourages the equitable
participation of all students regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race,
religion, or sexual orientation. Potential devaluation of students in the virtual classroom that can
occur by reference to demeaning stereotypes of any group and/or overlooking the contributions of
a particular group to the topic under discussion is inappropriate. (See Statement on Classroom
Climate, http://www.umd.edu/catalog/index.cfm/show/content.section/c/27/ss/1584/s/1541).
3. Students with Disabilities: These students should contact the instructor at the beginning of the
semester to discuss any accommodation for this course.
4. Academic Integrity: The University has approved a Code of Academic Integrity
(http://www.shc.umd.edu/code.html) which prohibits students from cheating on exams,
plagiarizing papers, submitting the same paper for credit in two courses without authorization,
buying papers, facilitating academic dishonesty, submitting fraudulent documents, and forging
signatures. Plagiarism policy: all quotations taken from other authors, including from the Internet,
must be indicated by quotation marks and referenced. Paraphrasing must be referenced as well.
The following University of Maryland Honor Pledge, approved by the University Senate, should
be included on the front page of all papers, projects or other academic assignments submitted for
evaluation in this course: “I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized
assistance on this assignment/examination.”
Students who engage in academic dishonesty in this course will receive no points for the
assignment in question, and will be immediately reported to the Honor Council and Office of
Judicial Programs for further action. There will be no warnings. Note: There is to be no
collaboration apart from that between student and instructor unless previous permission is granted.
