There is a place where time is still measured by the arrival of harvests, a place whose history is written by the Sun on the tanned faces of the locals from Mijas. Here, between fertile cultivated fields and gentle Plains, pleasure resides more than ever in the simplicity of the authentic; a universe of contrasts that, along with a myriad of narrated memories, it is possible to discover a way open toward a future packed with many possibilities.

EL VÍNCULO DE ENTRERRÍOS CON LA AGRICULTURA ES TAN ANTIGUO COMO LA HISTORIA DE LA HUMANIDADOcho siglos a.C., celtas y
celtíberos, conocedores de la
gran riqueza agrícola de estas
tierras, se enfrentaron en
una encarnizada lucha por la
conquista de una de sus áreas
más productivas.
En plena reyerta, la
totalidad de la tropa celtíbera,
comandada por el general
Melión, se despeñó por un
enorme tajo situado en el cerro
Porras, bautizando así esta zona
como ‘La Matanza’.
Los celtas poblaron, por
tanto, estos terrenos, explotando
sus fértiles tierras y sentando
así los principios básicos de la
agricultura moderna. Así nos lo
contó Tere, una de las vecinas
más antiguas del cortijo, una
historia que, al igual que el
almencino centenario que la
recibe cada mañana frente a
su hogar, la ha acompañado
durante muchos años desde
que la oyera de boca de sus
antepasados.
Más adelante, los campesinos
que habitaron por estos lares en
el siglo XVII, nos dejaron también
un valioso legado, símbolo de su
pasado agrícola. Datado, según
reza una placa, en 1644, Juan
Jaime aún recuerda cómo el
acueducto de ‘La Matanza’,
conocido como ‘La Matriche’,
abastecía de agua a los cultivos
de trigo y cereales que no hace
más de 60 años conformaban
el sustento de los habitantes de
Entrerríos.

ENTRERRIOS’S BOND WITH AGRICULTURE GOES BACK A LONG WAY JUST LIKE THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. Eighth century b.c., Celts and
celtiberians, connoisseurs of
the great agricultural richness
of these lands, clashed in a
fierce fight for the conquest
of one of its most productive
areas.
In full battle, all of the
celtiberian troops, commanded
by general Melión, went over a
cliff situated by cerro Porras,
baptizing this zone as ‘La
Matanza’ (the massacre). The
Celts therefore inhabited these
lands, exploiting their fertile
fields and thus provided the
basic principles of modern
agriculture. Tere, one of the
oldest residents of the nearby
farmhouse, told us so, a stories
like this centennial battle are
heard every morning at her
home.
Later, the peasants who
inhabited the area in the
seventeenth century, also
left a valuable legacy, the
symbol of its agricultural past.
Dated, according to a plaque
in 1644, Juan Jaime still
remembers how the aqueduct
of La Matanza known as ‘La
Matriche’ supplied water to
the wheat and cereal crops
for more than 60 years as a
support for the inhabitants of
Entrerrios.
The myths and the slight
fluttering of Jays guide our
walk until the first point of
reference.

THE GOLDEN BROWN COLOUR OF THE COUNTRYSIDE We travel to the green orchards
with their fruit trees, avocado
and olive trees that today, cover
the Entrerríos Valley. With a fully
mechanized irrigation system,
crops have been relegated to

ver, gradually other proposals
have arisen, to relaunch the
economy of the area, they in-
tend to promote quality rural

quedado relegados al ámbito

EL CAMPO DE MIJAS HACE REALIDAD ‘EL ABANDERADO’
THE MIJAS COUNTRYSIDE IS THE REAL ‘ABANDERADO’
Taking advantage of the fascinating past of vine growing in Mijas, the current owner
of this plot, German born Rudolf Nicholaus Ballauf, who has chosen for the past ten
years to live his dream in the municipality as the representative of cabernet sau-
vignon which today produces 1,800 vineyards. Waiting to become the designated
origin of Málaga, in charge of the estate, Antonio Sevillano, enthusiastically shows
us inside the cellar equipped with fermentation machinery, deposit and botelling, as
well as the laboratory and tasting room. A stroll through the vineyards allows us to
see the different varieties of grapes grown on the cabernet sauvignon estate, which
coexists with garnacha and tempranillo. Rudolf makes us partakers of his intention
to industrialise the winery, incorporating wines from other places and driving an
oenological tourism that aims to return the splendour of other times to the Mijeño
fields. Both owner and maintainer, described to us in detail the manufacturing pro-
cess of its wines from the grape harvest until bottling. Thus was born this delicious
fruity wine which, according to all counts, has already received praise from wine-
makers worldwide.

We don’t have to move too much to witness an equestrian show worthy of admiration. At the ‘Hacienda Los
Arcos’, the German couple, Angela and Sascha have been its directors of the stables for the past two years.
Dedicated to the sale and training of exemplary equines for top competitions, they specialise in dressage, a
discipline that makes the Andalusian horses into champions. Horse and rider perform a delicate dance, achieving
a spontaneous connection, an elegant harmony of movement, the fruit of their extensive experience for us. They
also offer individual horseback riding classes and sell horses of a high level; not for nothing do they have in their
stables Martinez Boloix stallions. On website www.caballodomaclasica.com, it is possible to consult all its ser-
vices. However, the world of horses is booming in Entrerríos. Hipico La Hoppla, Club Hipico El Dorado and Finca

Another look is the result of an optimistic vision of a group of women who have gone through breast cancer and whose images have been refl ected in the 27 photos that make up the exhibition. Photographers María Gómez, José Acevedo, Antonio Martín, Beatriz Ibañez and Sergio Infante have managed to capture the essence and the best of them all. The women featured are part of the programme ‘MUCHOZVIVIR’ from the Spanish Association against cancer which is offered to all women diagnosed with breast cancer as well as their family.
This exhibition has been possible thanks to the selfl ess work of photographers and the generosity of sponsors. Petroleros Mijas, Xanit Hospital, Profasan and Acapulco real estate. The purpose of the exhibition is to give… a different outlook, it is possible, “Cancer and life”. And with an early mammography you can save lives. Aside of the ‘MUCHOXVIVIR’ programme, the AECC has developed other activities such as the creation of a solidarity calendar.

Gabino, has nacido y te has criado en Madrid.
Elvis Presley resucita y junto a él podrán ver a unos cincuenta personajes.

Gabino, you were born and raised in Madrid. But do you have any special relationship with the South? what evokes you about this land?- it is a land that I know very well. I can only say that I love it. This is precisely the spectacle, A night with Gabino, premiered in Málaga, at the Theatre Festival eight years ago. In addition, two of my works have been premiered in Malaga it has always brought me good luck. ¿And do you know Mijas? - Yes. I have a friend in Mijas Costa, and I was forever in his house. When I’m in your terrain I understand why foreigners decide to stay. The white walls, such a special light...I would not mind living in a place like this. Now you are returning to Mijas to put on stage ‘A night with Gabino’, a play that has been going for 8 years. It’s a long time for a show? -it is a work that can be interpreted through everyday life. What it says knows no time. It’s like a stone you’re polishing and which gets better and better. There are always changes anyway. The lighting has been improved, things have been added and I have tried to make it an even more attractive show. Then, we could say that it is a work which has re-invented
itself or something?- The show works very well, it is very funny. Contains a storyline thread which is always there but things have been updated to give more agility and fun to the show. For example, if at a particular moment Gabino falls in love, international disasters happen, and characters like Obama, Rajoy or Hugo Chaves may make an appearance. If someone has already seen the work do they recognise it? - I don’t not think so. If you changed the title it would be a completely different work. I stopped making it two years ago and didn’t recognise it nor myself (laughter). Seriously, people will have fun. In essence, it is still A night with Gabino, but eight years on.Then, what we can expect from a night with you?- Well, it will be a lot of fun, an unforgettable night. I am sure that the public will have a phenomenal time for an hour and forty minutes. And they will also watch and listen to live music. Elvis Presley is
resurrected and you will see some fi fty well known people, imitations, songs... I must say that I have improved greatly in eight years as a singer. Now, the question that you have never answered. Is this autobiographical work or fi ction?-60% Of the work is autobiographical and the rest is fi ction. There are things that I invented, others that are splendid, but much of what is staged, is me. Changing tack a little and looking at your career what would you stay with? - I must say that I have been very fortunate. I have worked with the best in this country in my era. José Luis López Vázquez, Fernando Fernán Gómez, Agustin Gonzalez... this makes me feel very good. The theatre is a mother that always welcomes you. It is my Vice. It allows you to travel throughout Spain. Film is more volatile. I always dreamt, perhaps under the infl uence of Ay Carmela!, being a traveller, taking a trip anywhere as a nationwide comic.
Just over 44 years old but still transmitting that innocent and dreamy air that has marked all of his characters. Gabino Diego was happy to talk to Vive Mijas and tells us about his impressions and his return to the stage with his never-ending night with Gabino, a show which has been running for eight years already, but with variations. A little shy in the beginning, but much more at ease in the end, he reveals some peculiarities about his life, uncomfortable to talk about politics but dares to sing us some of the songs performed by Nono García “Tuna and chocolate”, an album produced by Diego Gabino himself.

Me parece tan bueno o
v i v e M i j a s

¿Qué relación tienes con ese país?- He estado unas cinco veces allí e, incluso, he llegado a tener pasaporte cubano.
(risas).
e n t r e v i s t apag46-pag55 53
Tell us about the characters you have interpreted... - There are many. Jim Romay, who was my neighbour, Agustin Gonzalez yonki and my own grandmother. It is a way of paying tribute to grandmothers who understand their grandson better than his own parents. I have great affection for my grandmother and I always remember the Elvis Presley suit she made me when I was young. Incidentally, talking about famous people, what gave you the anger that the public witnessed with your interpretation of Cuco in Torrente? -People will remember what they want to remember. And I think that, in this case, they remember Torrente because it was very good. It seems to me as good or better than the rest of roles. That people in the
street valued me is fantastic. Entertaining this way makes me feel very useful. Recently a few of the audience told me that if people laugh it prolongs life, Gabino has lengthened it somewhat. Imagine how you feel on hearing that. It is as if you are a humour therapist. On a personal level, You have already exceeded the 40s barrier ‘, the famous midlife crisis. Until now you always portrayed famous people as dreamers, juveniles, are you worried about not adapting to a more mature profi le? -Well, I think that I am already doing this. I am 44 years old. I am no longer a teenager, but I can be stupid and dumb also with 44 years. One is always growing and trying to adapt to the times. In this profession you always hope that things will be offered to you. I receive many offers, but I try to always
do what I want. This is not always possible, but at least I try. We must defend what we do and explain why we have done so and is diffi cult to defend something that you’re not convinced of.I read an interview where you told an an anecdote about your birthday... I don’t know if is true...- (laughter). Well yes. My parents are Cuban Spanish children. When the whole issue of revolution returned to Spain and I was born there. It was a mess. My father went to register me but there were some papers missing, so even though I was born on the 6th of September I was not registered until the 18th, with which, for practical purposes, my birthday is the 18th. I never celebrate that day, but I do celebrate the 6th. There is much messing around
v i v e M i j a s

with this. My friends always wish me the best on the 6th, so if someone celebrated it on the 18th they read it in the press, which is not a friend, (laughter). Did you have a Cuban past. What is your relationship with that country?- I’ve been there about fi ve times and I even have a Cuban passport. At home, my mother always cooked Cuban Food and naturally retains her accent. It was very funny, because when someone called at the house and caught it they always questioned me about whether it was my Dominican chacha (laughter). Enough of the jokes, I really like being cosmopolitan. Learning about many things. I envy those Jews who have a grandfather in New York, an uncle in London... they are all over the
World I am separated and I have a daughter who lives in Catalonia. Because of this, I know much about that area, see it... in short, I like to be in many areas. What personality that you have played, will remain with you forever? - You know, I have great affection for all of them. All for me are important, I have great affection for all. When I work I get up every day thinking this is a masterpiece. Because of this I don’t differentiate between Torrente and Rey Pasmado. Torrente I have great affection for because it went very well during the fi lming in Marbella. It is a privileged land, the Sun, the light... all of this makes one feel very inspired there. I also have very fond memories of Belle Epoque and Amanece
que no es poco and José Luis Cuerda...Do know of the morning Radio Mijas magazine programme called ‘Amanece que no es Poco’? It is a movie that our colleague Patricia Murillo, who hosts the programme, loves.- Yes? (Laughter). Well tell your colleague that we will shoot ‘Desde que Amanece Apetece’ afterwards. I have many anecdotes related to that fi lm. I remember we went to a religious court radio to promote it and when we arrived we were told that we could talk about anything but the fi lm. They said that with that title...of course, we said to them that since the Sunrise you can wish for many things, praying, going to church... (laughter).

Gabino, where can we see you after the Mijas performance? - I will be touring with this show until next February. I will be in Andalusia in Ecija, Chiclana, La Carolina, Utrera, Palma del Río and the tour will fi nish in Mallorca. We do not want to be indiscreet but will you be staying in Mijas?- well I arrive the day before work starts, so I will have time to visit the municipality, to know something of its gastronomy, and in principle yes, I would like to choose a mijeño hotel. Well, thank you for meeting with us and we hope that you feel at home.- Thanks to you too. And I hope to see you at the Las Lagunas Theatre on the 3rd of December. I hope that the mijeños greatly enjoy the show.
