What is fluoride varnish?•
Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on a child’s teeth to prevent cavities.

It can also be painted on a teeth that already have cavities. Fluoride can slow down or can help stop cavities from getting bigger.
• Fluoride varnish is supplied in individual dose packs.

How does fluoride varnish work?• Retards, arrests and reverses the tooth decay process.

Decreases the harmful effect of the mouth acids • Rebuilds tooth enamel because fluoride
help re-mineralization by acting as a catalyst.

Application process:• Clean and dry the teeth with the gauze.• Apply a thin layer of varnish on all the surfaces of the teeth with the disposable brush .

Application sequence:•
Start with the cheek surface of the teeth.• Apply a thin layer of varnish on the cheek and front surface of
all teeth• Maxillary(upper) & mandibular(lower)•
Front & back.• Now, apply the layer of varnish on the inside of the mouth in
the same pattern.• Finish with the chewing surface of the teeth.

• The varnish thickens after application quickly and may appear as a yellow film.
• Recommendations call for two applications per year.
• Two applications per year help reduce decay
dramatically.

Post-operative instructions:•
Don’t eat for one hour. • Eat only soft foods at the next meal.• Avoid sticky foods for the rest of the day (e.g. fruit
rollups, toffee or gum).• Don’t brush until the next morning .

Advantages:
Advantages of fluoride varnish over other professionally used varnishes are:• Easy and fast to apply • Safe for all ages • It can be applied in any setting and does not require the use of
dental equipment or instruments • Fluoride varnish is safe and possess no risk of an adverse
reaction because only a small amount is used and less is swallowed
