Its not only about tobacco?

Travel Retail is different from the domesticmarket and should therefore be regulated differently.

Having a different approach for Travel Retail is necessary to keep the international competitiveness for retailers’ (level playing field)……and possible if regulators are helped to understand the uniqueness of the business.

TOBACCO

Usually driven by governments’ health concerns or revenue

raising. If travellers can bring fewer duty free

products or cannot bring them at all, they will buy

less or not buy at all: allowances reductions

shrink global travel retail market size.

Language barriers and time constraints in travel retail make

visibility and accessibility to

products critical for a traveller that can

decide to buy elsewhere in his trip.

Creates an unnecessary

barrier to sale

Creates uncertainty for

psgrs and reducessales, and not only

in the concerned country

Impacts choice, availability and

product exclusivity

“It is not just Big Tobacco anymore. Public health must also contend with big food, big soda and big alcohol. All of these industries fear regulation, and protect themselves by using the same tactics”.

Dr Margaret Chan, Director General WHO

“We have seen much success with tobacco control. If we can now apply the same blend of evidence-based policy-making and determination to obesity and alcohol, we could save many thousands of lives”.

WHO Regional Office for Europe
