TOA Overview:
A new school year has begun, and with it your determination to make a change in your exercising habits. While waiting at a doctor’s office for your annual check-up, you came across an article that explains the importance of exercising and other healthy habits. You will read the article, interview some classmates to find out their sports preferences, and create posters to promote a healthy life style around the school.

Time Frame: One 25-minute class period
Description of Task:You are at the doctor’s office for your annual check-up. School will soon start again and your mom wants to make sure you that you are healthy. While you wait, you pick up a magazine and start flipping the pages. An article calls your attention because you see children your age having fun in the picture, and also because you understand the title. Read the article and answer the questions:
Materials Needed:
1. Copy of the article2. Comprehension guide
Teacher Notes:
1. Describe the task to the students.2. Explain the rubric.3. Distribute the article. (Make one class set that you will be able to reuse in other classes.)4. Distribute the comprehension guide. (One per student)5. Students complete comprehension guide after reading.
Adaptation: Teachers will use their own discretion as to whether to give pictures to be matched with the vocabulary or to allow the children to look for the cognates inside the article.

Los niños que no son activos y pasan mucho tiempo viendo televisión o jugando video juegos son más propensos a sufrir problemas de salud como obesidad y diabetes tipo 2.Impulsa a tus hijos a participar tan sólo una hora diaria en alguna actividad física. Time Frame: One or two 25-minute class period, depending on the number of students.
Description of Task: You left the doctor’s office determined to change your life. The doctor said that you have gained some weight. You know that your diet is healthy, but as your mother has said, you spend too much time in front of the television or the computer and not enough time exercising. After reading the article, you decide to give exercise a chance but you don’t know what to do. You decide to take a survey of your classmates to find out what they do for exercise.
Do the following:
1. Introduce yourself. 2. Interview 4 to 5 students in your class.3. Write your classmates’ answers in the chart provided.
Materials Needed: Survey
Teacher Notes:1. Prepare a unit related to sports and health before giving out this assessment. 2. Prepare a chart in advance for every student. 3. Children should write the answers correctly in the provided chart.
Adaptation: Teachers will use their own discretions as to weather to give children a word bank or a word-picture bank with their chart. (See examples)

Time Frame: Two 25-minute class period
Description of Task:You are beginning to realize how important it is to exercise and live a healthy life style. Your enthusiasm has been very contagious. Now your classmates want to help you promote the idea of “One hour of fun exercise a day and other healthy activities”. The teacher announced a poster contest that could help spread the message to the new Spanish students that are just arriving to the school. You will have to explain and promote your poster in front of the class. The five best posters will be displayed in and around the nurse’s office.
Make sure your poster: Is well organized Explains the importance of daily exercise and other healthy habits Uses correct spelling Is colorful Includes at least six different activities and promotes healthy behaviors NOTE: you may use the cutout pictures you have been coloring.
