La tcnica de EPG (grfico de la penetracin elctrica,monitoreo electrnico delcomportamiento alimenticio de insectos)se utiliza en estudios sobre insectos fitosuccvoroscon piezas bucales tipo picador o raedor; es una herramienta de gran importancia paraestudiar las interacciones planta-insecto, especialmente importante en la seleccin deplanta hospedera, estudios de resistencia y defensa de las plantas, y para estudiar lasactividades de vectores de patgenos de las plantas.La tcnica de EPG es un mtodo desarrollado en 1964 por McLean y Kinsey y

mejorado por Freddy Tjallingii (1978) del Laboratory of Entomology, WageningenUniversity, Holanda. Adems fue Tjallingii quien en 1985 introdujo el trmino EPG(Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata 38:177-186).

El objetivo principal del curso / taller de EPG es proporcionar actualizacin en los aspectostericos, y entrenar en las prcticas concernientes a la tcnica de EPG y sus aplicaciones.Se darn clases sobre los conocimientos tericos y antecedentes de EPG y el estado delarte de la tcnica de EPG, la interpretacin de las seales, el procesamiento de datos, y eluso y aplicaciones ms comunes. Los participantes debern dar una breve presentacin de10 min sobre su investigacin o plan de EPG.

Debido a que el curso/Taller tiene una fuerte componente prctica de capacitacin, habrlugar para un cupo de 20 personas. Por lo tanto, se seleccionar a los participantes de

acuerdo a la motivacin para realizar el curso luego de finalizada la fecha lmite deinscripcin.

The Electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique is used in many studies on insectherbivores with piercing mouthparts. It has shown to be a powerful tool to study plant-insect interactions, important in host selection, plant defence and resistance, andvector activities of plant pathogens. The EPG technique is a method developed in 1964 byMcLean and Kinsey and improved by Freddy Tjallingii from the Laboratory of Entomology,

Wageningen. Tjallingii was also who in 1985 introduced the term EPG.The principal aim EPG workshop/training course is to provide updates on the theoretical andtraining on practical skills concerning EPG technique and its applications. Furthermorelectures will be presented providing backgrounds of EPG recording and the state of theart on EPG knowledge of correlation, signal interpretation, data processing, and itsuse in the most common fields of application. Moreover, participants are supposed topresent a brief contribution on their research or EPG plan.

Due to the practical training aspects we will have place for 20 participants, maximally.Hence, if the interested persons exceed 20, we will limit the participation according yourinterest, we will decide after the registration deadline.

Course aim: to provide updates on the theoretical and training on practical skills concerningEPG technique and its applications.
