Apart from being an action, walking is also
a sign, a shape that can simultaneously
overlap the other shapes preexistent in
reality and on print. The world then turns
into an inmense aesthetic landscape, an
enormous canvas on which to draw while
walking, a medium that is not a blank sheet,
but an intricate drawing of historical and
geological sediments to which simply one
more is added.
Francesco piccio Careri.
The Danza Workshop is an architectural and urban
project and drat project title course o the School
that rom the start o its activities has waged on the
Architectural Investigation Laboratories (AIL Laborato-rios de Indagacin Arquitectnica, LIA) as a tool able
to explore the disciplines specic territories rom the
the stand point o project exercises, intensiying both
the students and the acultys knowledge and skills
while at the same time ampliying networks beyond the
workshops own limits.
Abandoning the old discussion over i architecture is
taught or is learned the AILs, as a p edagogical
approach try to generate venues that are conducive to
unleash the creative processes, awaken restlessness over
architecture and project, excite the senses in order to
perceive the until now h idden, generate the drive to
learn, to question spaces and aesthetics rom the stand
point o ethics o its own.
The AILs pose the project a s an research activity intothe material culture and at the same time a learning
experience o the architects specic skills . We think in
areas whose investigative practice allows to draw in
poetics, push out the limits o the disciplina ry world
and achieve a proession that is more resh, useul and
ecient, and at the same time novel and intense.
During these ve years we have developed joint ven-
tures with projects such as SPAM(Chile), UR(Argentina),
Paraormal(Argentina), Post-It City(Barcelona) and
Stalker(Italy), while at the same time participating in
workshops and seminars at the Universidad Catlica o
Chile, the UBA o Buenos Aires, the Universidad RomaTr
in Italy, the Escuela de Alicante (Spain), the Sudamrica
Workshop o the UBA (Argentina), and specially with
the School o Architecture o the Universidad de Talca
(Chile), with who we maintain an uninterrupted ex-change since 2007 and continue programming activities
in the uture.
In parallel and complementary to this, we have
pushed or the publishing and the exchange o the
practiced results through a web site (www.tallerdanza.
com) as through this periodical that intends to be at
the same time recap and projection o paths traveled
and yet to travel. Particularly in this year, 2011, we
set out on a joint experience with the Scholar Unit
directed by Federico Soriano o the Escuela Tcnica
Superior de Arquitectura o Madrid and the post
graduate course directed by Manuel Gausa in Genoa,
and having completed the Laboratory Post-productions
AIL we had the chance to count with the presence
o Federico Soriano, Padro Urzais, Amadeu Santacana
and Toni Gelabert, with whom we developed an intense
week long workshop ca lled Xlmt (in hal), that at the
same time launched a new experience o the same
laboratory whose statements and results are presentedin these pages.
This laboratory had one only excluding requirement: to
work with strangers, not anymore a schoolmate, but
someone that is in another c ountrys University, with
another calendar and another aculty. In this way it
is possible to tackle such current problematics as are
those o communication and tele-commuting, the ap-
parition o other players in the dierent stages o the
project, and even the disappearance o onesel. I a ew
years back the theories o uncertainty and o passive
control were so controversial in certain realms o our
discipline, today they are just another data point in the
practice o most o the production processes to which
we are conronted daily.
From this platorm, which or having overfowed thestrictly curricular expectations we have called The
Architecture Plant, other projects that transcend it and
continue eeding o o each other have also developed,
as are Enlace Ciudades Otras, the Political Urbanism
Laboratory (Laboratorio de Urbanismo Poltico), or the
periodical mapeo, which during the next 4 issues will
count with the nancing o the contestable unds or
culture o Uruguays Ministry o Education and Culture.
Ahead in the second hal o this hal mapeo the
presentation given by Marcelo Danza at the symposium,
to which he was invited to this last month o October,
at the University o Harvard can be read and a sum-
mary o the work proposal called orth by the South
American Project (SAP) or the years 2012-2013 that
will unction as the axis o activities or the Architec-
ture Plant during next year.
Set out by Felipe Correa and Ana Maria Duran, with the
support o the Department o Urban Planning and De-
sign o the Harvard Graduate School o Design and the

experts in the diverse elds , towards the end o creat-
ing an exposure platorm to allow architecture and the
many disciplines associated to the built environment
to actively participate in the setting orth o more
complex models o urbanization in South America.
The presented project seeks to ocus on inrastructures
multiple scales as indissociable parts o a unique
territorial, social economic and political corpus. The
work group (the Political Urbanism Laboratory) stands
on an unapologetic interest in reality as a possible
constructor o new utopias, and within which the
territorial inrastructures are considered not as a sub-
category neither o architecture nor engineering, but
as a tangible maniestation o the sublime in technique,
politics and art.
Based on this general hypothesis we shall develop
various thesis that will cut through several lines o
investigation (AILs) eeding back on themselves and
covering a gamut that goes rom revealing, making
public and re-signiying invisible inrastructures that
sustain existing social and political micro-organizations
in the South American Sou thern Cone, up to the work
on larger scaled projects that address the matters o
connectivity, irrigation, mobility and enhancement o the
continents resources.
The architectural, urban planning and territorial projects
are proposed as tools o investigation as is the creativ-
ity applied to reality as a method o enhancing the
art o the possible.
We think in areas whose investigative practice allowsto draw in poetics, push out the limits o the discipli-
nary world and achieve a proession that is more resh,
useul and ecient, and at the same time novel and
intense.

R. Mutt ya lo hizo por nosotros.
Sobra arquitectura. Sobra creatividad. Sobra originalidad.

R. Mutt has already done it or us.
There is more than enough architecture. There is more
than enough c reativity. There is more than enough
originality. Indeed, there really is a an excess o
originality, o the stamp, the orm which indicates the
unrepeatable style.
The most common recurrent criticism read in architec-
ture blogs is the one which mentions how similar this
or that project is to some other one. Normally in some
recondite location or improbable dates, although what
we mean is that it d oes not matter. In second place
comes the invective against constructed projects which
do not correspond to the renders shown during the
projects design process. Is it that we are still naive?
Is it that we havent grown-up enough to still believe
these airytales?
Art already ell into the arms o originality and did
not know how to get out o them. Only R. Mutt man-
aged to escape the spiral, even though he was not
exhibited in the hall o the independents and he was
not allowed to continue creating.
Today we call it postproduction.
Reality is comple te, replete, ull. Even i it is alse. This
is not overly important either, it is our eyes and brain
which will construct truths and alsehoods. We do
not need to produce but to consume what is already
produced. Within the pa norama o oversaturation and
over-construction we must begin to manipulate material
which has been produced and protect raw material or
what it is, our last resort.
We must not conuse originality with innovation;
original projects with personal projects. We must not
think o novelty when we talk about singularity, or o
authenticity when we reer to personality. To be indi-
vidual is already to be peculiar. Postproduction means,to us, to you, nding a way o inserting ourselves into
the innumerable streams o architectural production.
To use what is already given, to programme what is
immobile. R. Mutt has already don e it or us. In 1917
he showed us the way.
Strangers working in a team.
The architect has disappeared. The solitary character
that solves it all , isolated at their drawing boards , in
sole charge o all the tasks o project design and pro-
duction. Not only does society demand, in architectural
processes, the collaboration o numerous technical andconsultancy agents during the beginning, the denition
or the development o the project. It also demands that
architecture teams work complementarily with other
architecture teams.
Globalisation has imposed its law. The project no long er
links a site or a resul t with a production position, the
physical work place. But globalisation also retains its
subtle link with local activities; local collaboration, local
engineering, local construction companies.
Today we have to collaborate, sharing whichever
architectural phase o design or construction with any
stranger. We can, and must, reach unsuspected degrees
o creative intimacy with this person -proound ones.
However, similarly, reality has not changed the
architect as an experienced obser ver, that is to say,an individual personality who examines certain social
conditions beyond the actual works produced. This is
why the individual, unique, personal vision is still so
important.
It also involves refecting on the complex personal
relationship which each architect should establish with
their work. On one hand the instantaneous intensity
and the personal appropriation o all kind o material
which surrounds the project which reveals the passion
we must have to carry orward the subject matters
and on the other the detachment we must maintain
towards what is being developed as this allows us
to change, to adapt to new or diverse demands with
respect to the initial ones. How to make compatible
maximum individualism with the disappearance o
ego is precisely the challenge conronted by the worksystems we will be dealing with, during this course, and
in the uture.
University still avours individual learning. What is
learnt is knowledge, lists o knowledge and not

work systems or learning methods. The ew collective
exercises carried out are always over a long period o
time when the students get to know each other. This is
why we want to try a d ierent methodology, with real
workgroups o strangers working over a long period o
time and on already dened complex projects.
Project design routes. A project can have a linear path
towards a result or it can have instantaneous results.
Designing is a linear or a fuctuant route.
The rst path is well known. It is the result o scien -
tic thought. A location and problem are the star ting
point o a continuous, uninterrupted process. It is not
necessarily a straight route, it can be sinuous , with
regressions, with accelerations. But each step supports
the next. The process has a certain proximity to scale ,
meaning, the more denition the more the scale o the
work is reduced.
The second path is the one which we propose in this
course. A project must be known, well commanded a t
all scales and acets b eore dening it; drawing it. We
must know, obviously, where it is placed and what its
programme is, but we can also know which materials
will build it, what image it will present, which spatial
character will dene it, etc. All acets o the prism must
be mastered in order to master the result. And it ispossible.
In this second case the process is simultaneous and
fuctuant; through jumps in the denition, commanding
all scales o the project at the same time.
2011-02-09
Protoplan and protosection.
Inormation builds the project. It can all be data or be
treated as data; documents, numbers, interviews, images,
press articles, recent or pa st history, photographs,
language,... The inormation which will conorm or
surround the architectural matter must be mastered. In
principle we do not know which ones will be important.
Like real detectives we can trust neither appearances
nor the order or the current state o the objects.
Let us observe everything with the same intensity,
unravelling what is underneath. Then let us choose.
We must ne-tune this choice. Which element, part o
the whole, will be the programme; which as a system,
will structure all the subsequent data, parameters and
architectural material. This is why it is important to
have been thorough and precise.
But all this inormation is anecdotal i we are not able
to abstract it rom the contingent conditionings and
transorm it into parameters o our architecture, we
must be able to transer it to the same system, make
it all compatible with itsel . In our case, to transer it
all to the same graphic medium. We must be able to
take it to the realm o the abstract and once there,
represent it all. In this realm all types o inormation
can dialogue. We must not lose data in this procedure.
We must be able to eliminate while at the same time
not erase the circumstances.
To abstract means to isolate, separate the attributes o
the object, acquire a concept through consideration o
the common characteristics, eliminating the spatiotem-
poral locations. It is to eliminate contingencies to al low
reinjection once it has been manipulated, completed or
transormed.
Process.
We will work with all the inormation detected andtaking it into consideration, arranging those which
intuitively will be able to build the object today, we
will have to produce a drawing which will represent
the reduction to hal o the initial instructions pro-
posed in the course . These will be two drawings which
capture the plan and cross-section o the real project,
currently aborted, and which will be redrawn by means
o each students personal digital graphic media with
the abstract supercial, volumetric or spatial section
initially esteemed. We will call these abstract documents
ProtoPlans and ProtoSections.

Architectural documents are the Theoretical, the Techni-
cal and the Administrative; the rst explain the idea,
always revealing its size by means o scale reerences.
The Technical dene the construction by means o
data which speciy its exactitude; and the Administra-
tive settle Regulatory aspects attesting reality through
compliance. During the projects design process ideal
desires and interests are spec ied, in the construction
process we materialise the ruits o skills and talents
(which emphasise or attenuate the correction o our
interests) and in those processes o intelligence: interi-
orising the present brings u s closer to the uture . The
architect must be able to present his/her Architecture,
at least, through these three types o Documen ts which
are conceptually dierent both materially and literarily.
Other documents which pertain to architecture are theabstract, those which help us visualise our ideas and
make them primal, and also those which d escribe the
itinerary o the idea s until they become con crete. At
the beginning o the architectural process they are on
the same level as our anities, our prejudices. Anities
show us conspiracies/plots/schemes (conspiracies es el
plots o schemes) and d ensities, prejudices show us
compositions and aesthetic conditionings.
We produce and think according to the graphic tools
we use. According to the instruments which are at our
disposal. When we drew with pencil, or on pape r, the
drawing process was an emulation o the construction
process, a layout which, drawn all in one go, had to
optimise the inormation. When the design process usedoverlaying transparencies the drawing was resolved
through successive approximations and the architecture
acquired a polished character. Today the graphic tools
have transormed the line and the ne-tuning; thanks
to cut-out and paste, to see and substitute. On the
other hand, all the inormation -rom visual reerences
(magazines) to drawing tools (AutoCAD)- is on the
same technical level -the computer and the internet-.
Plan and cross-section are similar and complemen-
tary representations. They are amb ivalent, sometimes
ambiguous and sometimes very specic in their
individual objectives. Plan and cross-section are not
solely horizontal or vertical sections according to
technical conventions or perspective visualisations.
They are not plans. They are technical instruments
which allow us to control, manipulate and describe an
architectural space with a ll its technical, material orprogrammatic data. A plan can contain all or none o
the foors o the c omplex. A section can be all o the
possible sections as much as it can be the sole section
which coordinates all the possible plans. It is a contract
between all the parame ters o the project. They are

activations rather than conclusions. They are assembling
instruments as much as operational controls. Together
they determine a procedure . They do not need reer-
ences or explanatory images but data and connections.
But prior to them, within the abstract o our ideas ,
there are images o plans and sections which originate
in anities and evocations; still not concrete, they are
vehicles o app roximation, sketches... They are geometry-
conjuring-images o the project and among these are
those which we call protoplans and protosections. They
are visions in which both time and spatial overlapping
are rozen, they conorm the cloud o our thoughts.
Establishing a Teaching Process to create these ideal
two- dimensional conjectures-images involves a learning
system which allows us to rely more on our intellectual
anities than on our prejudiced talents. For this wemust leave aside concrete conditionings o existing
documents -fve plans and sections rom dierent
projects and architects-, so as to, through manipulation
and ollowing the copy-pasteprocesses, generate images
which are the result o interpreting, manipulating and
constructing something rom recycled Architecture
material. Architectures representative materials (plans,
photographs, models...) are not architecture; they are
like the debris we would nd ater its demolition. At
the most, i we are mythomaniacs, we would be able
to say that this bit o brick was part o the such and
such villa, the same as photographs, plans and other
objects. I, rom our proession, we know how to read
any object careully we will be able to work on it so
as to speciy it in an architectural representation. This
is the teaching objective.
We can talk about a material calligraphy which reers
us back to real conditions; they are not only stroke
weight and ll, but also material desires already
represented. They interpret, not representing yet, ideals
and antasies o both spatial and personal presences.
What is public and private has as much to do with
darkness or clarity as with opacity or transparency
or with noisiness or silence. We can extract anities
in-between the materiality and its compartmentations.
They are starting to resemble architectural documents
as the image o a oetus resembles a baby. There are
two ongoing processes, a physical one which has to do
with survival, and another genetic one which has to go
with nature. The survival aspect o our process has to
do with the level o denition, the degree and the pre-
ciseness. It is the capacity o inormation which we are
able to endow to our id eas to explain them. The genet-ic side o the p rocess has to do with our interests, our
ideas, our obsessions, antasies and occupa tions.
The data to be obtained and analysed has to do
with programmes and densities and also, o course,

with the boundary conditionings. When concerning the
programme we have to use intuition to distinguish
which uses our projec t lends itsel to. A programme
is an organised project o activities and its behaviour
has to do with aspirations o spatial complexity which
qualiy architecture. Natures today are owners o the
compaction producing the distribution and materiality
o which the la tter is the carrier. There is an imposed
order with its characteristic geometries or a deerred
order with indenite geometries. In the same way we
already have to intuit uses we must intuit perimeters;
both exterior and interior. Those uses o compartmenta-
tion are already more dened.
We must not read patterns or explore geometric na-
tures to identiy those natures which are concentrated,
disperse or scattered, according to their geometrical
conspiracies/plots/schemes, compartmentation densities
or circulatory nature. The resulting natures are due to
the compaction produced by the distribution. There is
an imposed order with its characteristic geometries or
a deerred order with indenite geometries.
The successive layers o inormation -gravitational,
normative, material or urnishings- will be those whic h
will progressively ocus, dene and document the act
plan and section.
Each one o these layers will talk about a certain spe-
cies and o its adaptation processes, about a diagram
which is not presented as a justication o this layer
although it is perceived in its organisation. They will
talk about a geometric conspiracy/plot/scheme reerring
to an obsession with compacting and taking over that
indenite space which is situated between the contour,
which owes itsel to the location, and the environ-
ment, which owes itsel to the p rogramme. It is the
place where the aade rests, where the antasies are
understood and where intentions are concreted.

O escaleras a menorescala.
Architecture is built through the public spaces we inject
in each project. It is not in orms or volumes. It is not
in oreign exteriority. Nor is it in languages. Not even
in the space in itsel empty. Architecture occurs when
public character is recognised in the programmes, the
spaces, the processes or the materials, and is made
visible.
What is public space in architecture? The rst thing
which comes to mind are the empty exterior spaces
which connect buildings to others. That which is let
over, the background that highlights the built mass ,
and which is necessary to connect and isolate at the
same time. Places which have to be designed and
endowed with an aesthetic image . Other ideas opublic space that come to mind are those o transport
inrastructures, collective communication systems,
networks such as roads and motorways, or example, or
stairs, in a lesser degree. And the physical su pports o
the collective or the empty areas or patios which have
no constructed elemen ts, or no programme like those
airports or interchange nodes. For this reason another
common mistake is to think that public space is, as
it is, a programme. A programme called public space
and which must be complied to and ormalised as any
other typied use. A programme which everybody talks
about and lists but which we are not able to assign or
clearly dene.
But what we are reerring to is something else. The
public matter in architecture is diverse with respect to
this bundle o conventionalities. It is a character ratherthan a room, a movement rather than an inrastructure,
a calculated indeniteness rather than a calculated
appropriation, an unoreseen unexpectedness rather than
a programmed unexpectedness.
The public space is not a place nor a use but the pos-
sibility o having space, o being used in a civic way.
It is a characteristic o the action. It is circulation, and
lingering, above all circulation, as long as it accepts the
possibility o close contact among a group o strangers,
and the posterior appropriation o it by that same
collectiveness. As the sociologist Manuel Delgado says:
That place is not a place but a taking place. Pure
happening, public space only exists insoar as it is used,
which is the same as saying, passed through, as it can,
in act, only be dened as this: a mere way o passing
through it.
An certain architecture has a public space within
because to be used in those individualised, private or
collective programmes, it is necessary to go through
certain areas. And those areas are pure passing
through. Even i it is solitar y, private, isolated or
individual, it has the movement o the common; the
anonymous group, inserted within its possibilities,
true or potential, o existence. Hence, public space is
ound in the regulated system o urban areas, rom
exteriority to the most intimate, that which constitutes
the circulation through the interior o architecture; the
interiority. It is there that the c haracter which denes
the expressions o taking place or passing through it
will be in all its degrees o possibility.
It involves endowing degrees o the above mentionedcharacter to the communication and distribution system
o the building. Within the section which constructs
the support or spatial connectivity, this character
will provide the index o un-appropriation which the
network will be endowed with. This character recognises
ESPACIO PBLICOPUBLIC SPACE

density and circulation, but to work with it we must
revise other adjectives.
This area o public space is mobile. It is disperse as
opposed to the concen tration o power. But it is also
orthright although this may seem contradictory. It
is empty, but as empty as the imagination which is
ull. It is neither objects nor memories. Public space
is undetermined. It is inormation a nd reedom. It is
improvisation. It has no associated typology. It has no
predetermined actions and does not predetermine its
events. Public space is generic, eatureless. Ultimately, it
is in unstable balance as it orces passing through it
and not lingering.
They are neither closed categories nor opposed systems.
There are no borders and so we cannot draw silhou-
ettes or orms. There are public, semi-public and private
paths with subtle degrees o dierence between them.
There are mixes and colloids which leave suspendedportions o private space in the continuous magma o
the public area. We can also, on many othe r occasions,
imagine and observe the contrary, public space let
suspended in the private area.
However, we should not only think o it exclusively
in terms o movement. Public space in architecture
possesses a specic characteristic: it must overlay its
condition o public circulation and be able to associate
any programme in an op en, simultaneous and multidi-
rectional relationship. I reer, on occasions, to searching
or its seclusive condition. I previously we denied
the character o public space to urban communica-
tion inrastructures, we cannot now all into the same
temptation. Public space orces one to think about the
superimposing and coinciding o programmes; about the
coexistence o collective use and individual utilisation;about introducing an indeterminacy gene in the uses
and a static gene in internal communications . We can
transer the control o the programmes we work with
in our projects rom support to transit, to mobility and
to fows.

Public spaces have progressively lost intensity and the
capacity o control and organisation over the systems
they were integrated into due to the increasing control
which has been tried to be enorced on them, both
by the power, or owner o the object, as well as by
the designers who developed nished aesthetic orms
without the possibility o soiling them. We cannot, then,
think o it in terms o control, o design, but use more
misma colectividad.

Vuelve a independizarse. Retorna a puroacaecer.
ambiguous and open design tools. Public space has
no owners but it does appropriate the user or itsel.
I the user seizes it, it is provisionally, only when is
present. When he leaves the space , leaving the building
behind or accessing it, the space is de-appropriated
once more. It becomes independent ag ain. It return to
pure taking place.

Inrastructures as utopias o reality.
The research seeks to ocus on inrastructures multiple
scales as indissociable parts o a unique territorial, social economic and political corpus. The workgroup
stands on an unapologetic interest in reality as a
possible constructor o new utopias, and within which
the territorial inrastructures are considered not as a
-sub-category neither o architecture nor engineering,
but as a tangible maniestation o the sublime in tech-
nique, politics and art. Based on this general hypothesis
we shall develop various thesis that will cut through
several lines o investigation eeding back on themselves
and covering a gamu t that goes rom revealing, making
public and re-signiying invisible inrastructures that
sustain existing social and political micro-organizations
in the South American Southern Cone, up to the work
on larger scaled projects that address the matters o
connectivity, irrigation, mobility and enhancement o the
continents resources.
The architectural, urban planning and territorial projects
are proposed as tools o investigation as is the creativ-
ity applied to reality as a method o enhancing the
art o the possible This investigative strategy will be
undertaken mostly with proessors and students o the
Taller Danza workshop o the School o Architecture o
the Universidad de la Repblica in Montevideo together
with a select group o guest proessors and experts
rom Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Drat projects
o possible inrastructures are expected to be obtained,
as well as experiments on the re-signication o the
inrastructural matter.
1. General lines o investigation and
initial hypotheses
1- Inrastructures end up crystallizing a collective social
project.
In South America, the sacral pre-Columbian inrastruc-
tures veriy this hypothesis, as do the inrastructures o
evangelization, domination and o resource extraction
o the colonial e ra, as well as those o communication,
commerce and liberal institutional representation o the
independence.
This investigation is thereore a magnicent opportunity
to debate the political project o our age.
2- The arrival o the 21st century with a low level o
anthropization and sparse inrastructures sets South
America onto a privileged position on the world stage.
Supporting this hypothesis:
a. The historical perspective is unsurpass-able or capitalizing on other experiences, as the
European, North American, Japanese and even those
o India and China. Many o the hits and misses o
extreme anthropization are now out in the open.
b. There is available still in a high p ercent-

age the most valuable resource o the coming centuries:
land, open and habitable space.
3. To limit the matters o inrastruc ture to the territo-
rial macro-acilities restricts the possibilities or actionand subversion o the present state o aairs.
Supporting this hypothesis:
a. Nowadays the communicational, inor-
mational and socially cohesive inrastructures, as well
as those generators o knowledge and innovation are
support or the growth and development o road and
port inrastructures, hegemonic these in the 19th and
20th centuries.
b. Many inrastructural acilities can be
supported today by non-invasive technologies, riendly
towards the environment and their host communities.
Parting rom these hypotheses, this investigative
group proposes to think o a sustainable territorial
development project or the support o the uture
new regional and world orders. Towards this end, it issubstantive to widen the analysis and proposal scopes
beyond those traditional o the inrastructural at a
territorial scale.
2. Investigative tools
The architectural, urban and territorial planning projects
will be our main tool o investigation. These investiga-
tions, projects, pregurations, experiments and proposals
will be developed in Taller Danza (Danza Workshop),
the -architecture powerhouse- o the Universidad de la
Repblica o Uruguay, which will be conceived in this
occasion as a Think Tank. The architecture powerhouse
is an academic structure or project teaching that
encompasses ten courses throughout the six-year period
o the architecture career instruction. It holds courses
in architectural, urban and territorial planning projects
or an average o 500 students a year with a structureo more than 40 proessors and specialized consultants.
It has maniested since its inception a special interest
towards investigation in the elds o architecture and
urbanism as pertaining to the project process, which
motivated the design o the -Architectural Investiga-
tion Laboratories- (AIL) [Laboratorios de Investigacin
Arquitectnica, LIA].
3. Project objectives
The utopian will o transormation and positive
rebalance o the world we inhabit runs through the
construction o new inrastructures. They are the crys-
tallization o a latent reading o the world, and in this
sense make present yearnings , ears, myths and desires
o the times that saw them be. On this basis, we set
out to investigate a dimension o the architectural and
urban that transcends the purely ormal and stylistico the moment in order to contact with a wider more
inclusive one. The proposition is to involve creatively all
o the anthropizations o the space we inhabit relat-
ing them in a more resh and unprejudiced cultural
construct or architectural matters, capable o engaging

4. Methodology
The work methodology will be grounded on the instal-

(AIL, LIA in Spanish) during at least two working
semesters. These LIA-AIL will count with proessors and
invited technicians procient in specic matters.
At the start o the semester, the Proessors and
investigators in charge shall perorm a survey and
analysis o the specic subjects that will lay the
groundwork or the development o concrete projects
by the students who through the critical interpretation
o external actors will be conronted with dimensions o
reality that will exacerbate the approaches complexity

as much o the students as o the proessorship shall
be explicitly recognized in all cases.
For such eect, distinguished Proessors and Investiga-
tors both o the South American and the European
spheres have been summoned (conrming their will to
work collectively through the course o the Investiga-

0. Develar desacuerdos.

0. Reveal Disagreements.
Jaques Ranciere denes with precision:
Disagreement will be understood as a particular
type o speech situation: that in which one o the
interlocutors understands and at the same time does
not understand what the other says. The disagreement
is not the confict between whom who says white and
whom who says black. Its that existing between whom
who says white and whom who says white but does
not understand the same or does not understand that
the other means the same with the name o whiteness.
The generality o the ormula demands, naturally, some
precisions and orces some distinctions. Disagreement is
not ignorance. The concept o ignorance supposes that
one or another o the interlocutors or both by eect
o the simple ignorance o a concerted discourse or a
constitutive illusion do not know what the other says.
It neither is the misunderstanding that rests in the
imprecision o words.
What do we mean when we speak o the hybridization
o the collective body?
1. The territory as a collective body.
I the word terrain reers us to the telluric or to a
specic portion o ground, territory harks back to
a new entity that amalgamates the natural and the
articial, geography and geopolitics; it is essentially
a construct o culture and power. It is in this sense
that it interrelates subjectivities giving rise to sec toral
logics and new collective subjectivities that constantly
recongure themselves at diverse scales, conronting
and complementing each other. Thereore, we reer to
the territory as an essentially politicalconstruct. The
corporeity o the territory is given as much by its
physicality terrain as by the innity o material
and cultural an thropizations that operate on it. In
this sense, as with the humans, the territorial body is
natural and ar ticial, primitive and technological, mate-
rial and spiritual.
2. Inrastructures as hybridizers.
The amplitude o concepts to which the concept
inrastructure reers to and its widespread use in the
dierent areas o knowledge leads us to the methodo-
logical need o de ning our eld o interest. An etymo-
logical approach to the term bares the dual component
o the inrastructural: inra as that which is beneath
or at the service o something and struc ture as that
which orders it and gives sustention.
This will be our starting point or the approach to
the inrastructural. We shall work on the agreement
o inrastructure as that which gives sustenance to a
certain order o things. The constructs that give sus-
tenance, and thereore with which we must interac t i
we intend to alter a uture order on our c ontinent, are
not only the land and maritime communication routes, nor the energy macro-inrastructures , but are also the
nano-constructs that weave the social, cultural, political,
economic, aective or religious n etworks. It is or that
reason that we are interested in setting the problem at
multiple scales and complexities.
3. Entropy o the hybridizing process.
Beyond its operative purpose, the sum o inrastructures
ends up conorming a complex entity that extends
entropically throughout the territory. This multi-
dimensional, multi-scalar and similar to a thicket in
expansion is built uninterruptedly as much by the
macro-action o the states as by the micro-interventions
o the individuals. Recently the incorporation o satel-
lites has extended its domain to the extra atmospheric
space.

amilias, pequeas empresas e instituciones.B.

We no longer act neither on a physically nor a cultur-
ally virgin body. The course o things has adopted a
sense, and at most we can apply a deviation vector
to it. The energies o that new orce vector that well
apply with the projected inrastructures is limited
and will aim to divert the enormous inertia o the
collective body and its sectoral constructs, or which
its application at the right spot, and at the right time
with the precise intensity is o the essence. Neverthe-
less, we must always humbly recognize that beyond the
analytical eorts, the consequences o our intervention
will also have an uncertain result and will increase the
entropic process.
