R E F L E X I Ó N

ir a trabajar.

Meet

Fr. Charles “Chaz” Dunn

Since many have asked after me and we haven’t been able to see each other with the

current Covid-19 shutdown at our parishes, I thought writing this would be a good oppor-

tunity for you all to get to know me a little bit. My homily this past Sunday spoke to

healthy revelations of who we are, and so I’ll start with a brief biography.

My father was in the Air Force from 1977-97, being stationed at Pope AFB, NC,

right next to Ft. Bragg, NC, which is near Fayetteville, so I grew up as a military brat. We

were an atypical military family in that we only moved twice: once when we moved to

Moody AFB, GA, and second, when we moved to Southeast Missouri upon Dad’s retire-

ment.

I graduated from Leopold High School in 1999, and attended the University of Mis-

souri-Rolla, which is now called Missouri University of Science and Technology. I started

out as a mechanical engineering major, but found that I couldn’t understand the Calculus

and Physics required to make it as an engineer, so I changed my major to History.

I graduated from Rolla in 2004, and then went to graduate school in 2005. At the

same time, I worked at Wal-Mart for the next five years while I worked on my Master of

Arts degree in History.

During a hiatus I took in 2009, I remember having a dream where my Dad and

brother Dan (who I’m sure you’ll meet soon) were in it, and then the dream goes dark. A

voice spoke my name firmly, but with great love, and I thought it was Dan trying to wake

me up to go to work. I woke to find no one there, and said, “Oh,” remembering the story of

how Samuel was called in the First Book of Samuel in the Old Testament. After talking

with a local priest and then attending a Project Andrew Dinner in Cape Girardeau, I real-

ized God was calling me to the priesthood, and applied for the Fall Semester of 2010.

I attended seminary at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St.

Meinrad, IN, and I had a great time there going deeper into my vocation, with all of the ups

and downs that any person has in life. I was ordained to the priesthood on June 24th, 2016,

the Nativity of John the Baptist.

I served first at Immaculate Conception in Springfield, MO, while helping out every

other weekend at a cluster of parishes that included the cities of Mansfield, Ava, Gaines-

ville, Mountain Grove, and Cabool.

In 2018, I moved to St. Peter the Apostle in Joplin, and also helped out at St. Ann in

Carthage. I also enjoyed working with McAuley High School, where I served as Chaplain.

My favorite things to do when I have free time are reading, writing, video games,

playing and watching sports, and watching (mostly action/fantasy) movies. I like a lot of

different types of food that range from pizza to sushi, but as I say often, “If it tastes good,

I’ll eat it!” (Meatloaf normally doesn’t taste good, if you’re wondering! LOL)

So, there you have it: the one-page summary of my life! As I said in my homily, I look for-

ward to working with you all to draw you closer to Christ and each other as a community.

If you have any questions, or want to go over some things with me, then my email address

is [email protected]. The only time I don’t answer that is on my day off and week-

ends, but I normally answer otherwise on the same day. God bless and have a great week!

…The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants—all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of pray-er; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gen-tiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gen-tiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. …. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. I was waiting for the “small whispering sound”—to quote 1 Kings—when Fr. Richard Rohr’s daily meditation struck my eye. I’m go-ing to let Fr. Richard have the column today….. Spark of the Divine  August 7, 2020 Matthew Fox has studied, written, and taught on theology and the mystics for decades. In one of his books on Meister Eckhart, a Dominican mystic, Fox writes: In the soul, Eckhart maintains, there is “something like a spark of divine nature, a divine light, a ray, an imprinted picture of the divine na-ture.” [1] . . But we have to make contact with this divine spark by emptying ourselves or letting go. And then we will know the unity that already ex-ists. [2] Indian-born teacher Eknath Easwaran (1910–1999) puts it in similar terms: Life’s real and high-est goal . . . [is] to discover this spark of the divine that is in our hearts. . . . When we realize this goal, we discover simultaneously that the divinity within ourselves is one and the same in all—all individu-als, all creatures,… Meister Eckhart was frequently criticized by his contemporaries (and still is by some people today) because his language was far too unitive. We like our distinctions! We don’t want to hear that we have the same soul as our enemies, not our

personal ones and certainly not our cultural or global ones! We want to hate them, don’t we? And far too often our religion seemingly gives us per-mission to do so. But mystics don’t hate anyone. They simply can’t. They pray, as Jesus does on the cross, “Father forgive them, they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). The mystic knows the other person doesn’t know. It’s not mal-ice as much as ignorance and unawareness. And, of course, it’s a burden to know; it’s a responsibil-ity to know, because once we know that God has inhabited all that God has created, then all of our distinctions are silly. They are just ways to create self-importance and superiority for ourselves and put down someone else. We’ve played this game since grade school! Mysticism begins when we start to make room for a completely new experience of God as imma-nent, present here and now, with and within all of us. God isn’t only transcendent, “out there,” and separate from me. Augustine of Hippo (354–430) wrote that God is “more intimate to me than I am to myself.” [4] St. Catherine of Genoa (1447–1510) said, “My me is God: nor do I know my selfhood except in God.” [5] Like all mystics, they overcame the gap, and we can too. When God is no longer out there or over there, we have begun the mystical journey. It’s not simply that we have a new relationship with God. It’s as though we have a whole new God!

From Sr. Diane: Take a really close look at those around you: your spouse, your children, your par-ents, your siblings, your friends—even your “enemies”! Now—look more closely at them, as though you realize for the first time that they “are” an incarnation of God especially for you! If you can reflect on this—YOU ARE BECOMING A MYSTIC! If that’s all that happens to us while we’re in this pandemic—then the experience is worth it! Tell me about your experience next time you see me!

“When God is no longer out there or over there, we have begun the mystical journey. It’s not simply that we have a new relationship with God. It’s as though we have a whole new God!”—Fr. Richard Rohr

Spiritual Communion Prayer

With spiritual communion, Jesus will give us the graces that we need this moment to be faithful to our mission of being witnesses of the Love of God before all men. Let us pray…..

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I de-sire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
