WHY BUY COFFEE AT CHURCH This year begins the 4th season that Just Coffee will be sold at Santa Catalina. The Social Awareness Ministry began this pro-ject as part of our parish attempt to help with the problem of Mexican immigration without documentation. Just Coffee is a cooperative venture begun by the Presby-terian Church and the coffee growers in Chiapas, Mexico and has spread to numer-ous Catholic and Protestant churches around the country. The coffee is grown in the mountains of Chiapas and Vera Cruz, Mexico on family farms. After the coffee is harvested, it is shipped to Agua Prieta, Mexico (just across the border from Doug-las, AZ) where it is roasted, ground, pack-aged, and shipped to buyers in the US. Since this is a cooperative, the farmers are able to receive a respectable price for their coffee and support their families without having to resort to the dangerous border crossing to find sustainable work.

The coffee is sold in one pound bags for $10 so the price you pay is competitive with other premium coffees. Plus loyalty cards are provided that entitle frequent shoppers to one FREE pound of coffee for each 10 pounds purchased. Many varieties are available. The farmers grow the beans without pesticides and the roasting plant recently received its Organic certification.

During the past 3 seasons, you have pur-chased enough coffee from our Just Coffee cart to allow one family to be added to the cooperative. Let’s continue that this year. Look for the Just Coffee cart on the patio on October 1 and 2 and during the first week-end in the months to follow. Please join us in making this our most successful season!

All proceeds are returned to the Just Coffee cooperative. This is not a fund-raiser for the parish.

OLIVE WOODCARVINGS FROM BETHLEHEM Please visit the tables featuring arts from the Holy Land (nativity sets, rosaries, statues, crucifixes) after ALL Masses the weekend of October 8 and 9. Stavros and George represent many Catholic families from Bethle-hem. These families have been dependent upon sales of their hand carved religious articles to tourists of the Holy Land. Due to the conflict in the Middle East, tourism has slowed down so in order to survive, they

have turned to Catholic communities in the United States to purchase their artwork. Carved from wood of sacred olive tree, this work has been traditional for Bethlehem families for more than 400 years.

We pray to accomplish more for our Catholic community in the Holy Land. Amaz-ingly enough, the Catholic community dropped from 22% to less than 2% in the last 20 years. We hope that with this mission we can make a difference. We thank you in advance for all your support. God bless!

The Knights of Columbus are hosting another one of their

popular Pasta Dinners!

DRESS A GIRL AROUND THE WORLD MINISTRY We are a ministry that sews simple and well made dresses for girls around the world. We meet once a month starting October 12 at 10 am in the Cholla room. There we collect the dresses and learn from each other ideas on how the dresses are constructed, plus fellowship with other ladies. We do our sewing at home with instructions that everyone follows.

Imagine a world where every girl owned at least one dress. Not only are you gift-ing a girl with her first ever new dress, you are telling her she is loved by you and her Creator. In sewing a new dress for a little girl, you bring her the four hopes: Dignity, Joy, Health, and Love.

Please plan to join us as we use our talents to sew with love dresses for little girls in many countries around the world.

If you have questions, please contact Geri at 505-6107 or [email protected].

OCTOBER IS BABY BOTTLE DRIVE MONTH Respect Life Sunday, is the first Sunday in October, which is also known as Sanctity of Life Sunday. The Catholic Church states that every day after the first Sunday in October we should talk to you about the sanctity of life. If you were with us last year at Life Teen, you might remember learning about the Seven Catholic Social teachings, and that the first one is the Life and Dignity of the Human Person.

We believe that human life is scared and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. In other words, all human life is precious. Beginning in the womb, to the tomb when we die. We believe that every person is precious, and that people are more important than anything else is. Remember that we are made in the image and likeness of God. That is why we must make sure to respect each other, and to be there for each other.

One of the things that youth ministry does for our community, to reflect the dignity of the human life, is helping out with a baby bottle drive for Reachout Women's Center.

My predecessor Adam Eichelberger (Ogie) initiated our connection with Reachout a couple of years before leaving Santa Catalina. We have continued to help Reachout every year since and would hope to we continue to do so for many, many, more years.

During the month of October, after all the Masses we hand out baby bottles to our wonderful parishioners. They take the baby bottles home and fill them with spare change, dollar bills, or a check. Two weeks later, they return the filled bottles to the Narthex in the Church and we turn them in to Reachout Women's Center.

Many other parishes in our community do the same fundraiser; however, thanks to the generosity of our parishioners we are able to make a sizable donation each year. Last year, Reachout mentioned that Santa Catalina Church collected nearly $5,000, more than any other parish in town.

I believe that the reason that we are successful is because our parishioners are kind and caring individuals. They know that they are supporting a good cause. Reachout helps women with pregnancy testing, ultra sounds, and counseling. They also help support moms that are in need of diapers, formula, and clothing from newborn to 36 months.

Next weekend we will be handing out the baby bottles to our parish family. We hope that every family participates in our efforts to make this another successful year for our moms and babies in need.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS TO BEGIN!

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Do you know someone who is interested in becoming Catholic? Were you baptized in another faith and would like to become Catholic? Are you a baptized Catholic who has not been Confirmed or made your First Holy Communion? Are you a Catholic or non Catholic who would like to learn more about the Catholic Christian community and its beliefs?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then join us for our R.C.I.A. inquiry process.

WHAT IS R.C.I.A In R.C.I A. an inquirer develops a greater understanding of what it means to be Catholic by meeting with everyday Catholics and discussing with them their Catholic faith. This is accomplished within the context of a small community that is led by teachers and sponsors who guide candidates by example and word to a greater understanding of Catholic teachings, traditions, and practices.

At various stages in the program the candidates will be given the opportunity to make minor acts of commitment towards their progress in this journey. There is no pressure to make such commitments. We do not believe in coercion, because conversion can’t be forced. The Lord has a different time table for each person according to their place along His path for them. Conversion is the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit, not ours. However, because it is an initiation to full communion with the Catholic Church that is being sought, one must be given the opportunity to express their desire to continue on this journey or not .

Scripture says, “Faith in the heart leads to justification, confession on the lips leads to salvation” (Romans 10:10)
