OCTOBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY I am sure that you own at least one rosary; some of you may even have a collection in a variety of colors and sizes. However, owning one, and praying with it are two different stories. I have friends that are very devoted to the rosary, while others find it repetitive and don’t pray it at all.

I personally love the rosary. The fact that it is repetitive is the reason why I love it. I find that repeating the prayers helps me focus, and block out the distractions in my head. It allows me to truly let go and let God handle things. I never really understood the rosary growing up. I would hear it in Spanish at funerals, but it was so fast I found it not to be prayerful at all. When I was in my late thirties, I belonged to a prayer group and we were studying about our Blessed Mother. It was then that I learned more about her and the rosary.

As a matter of fact, it was at my friend’s grandfather’s wake that I realized how much it meant to me. I was running late to the wake and had to stand in the back, for it was a full house. First of all, you need to know that I am a very prompt person. The fact that I was late that day, I believe was meant to be. As the deacon began to pray the rosary there was a man standing next to me. He was talking to someone throughout the entire prayer. I found it very hard to pray. He said, “These stupid Catholics they don’t know that salvation comes through Jesus Christ not Mary. They are so dumb, they don’t even know scripture, and worship Mary more that God……”

Well, after the rosary was over. I had to say something. I began by excusing myself, and then said,

“Sir, I am sure that you love and respect your mother very much, and you wouldn't allow anyone

to speak badly about her. Well sir, you just spoke badly about my Mama and I can’t allow you to do that! If your mom is special to you, then why wouldn't Jesus’ mother be even more special. We love our Blessed Mother, and we respect her and give her that place because that is what is asked in scripture.

First, Catholics know scripture. As a matter of fact, if you had kept quiet during the prayer, you would have heard it. The rosary is about the life of our beloved Savior Jesus Christ. You will find it in all four Gospels. In the Gospel of John (19:26-27) Mary was at the foot of the cross with John, the beloved disciple tells us, "When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold your son.' Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother.'" We believe that Jesus, from the cross, gave His Mother to every human person for all time.

That is why we respect her and give her, that place of honor. We don’t worship her. She would not like for us to do that. She always pointed to her son, never to herself.”

He kept quiet and heard what I had to say without responding. I heard later from my friend that he was her uncle, and that he learned something about Catholics that he never knew.

Our Catholic traditions are what make us Catholic, but we need to learn more about why we do what we do. Last week, at Life Night we handed out rosaries thanks to Fr. Larry. The rosaries were blessed by Pope Francis, and had a blessed medal attached to it. They even glow in the dark. We taught our teens how to pray the rosary, and prayed a decade together, because that is all we had time for that evening. We encouraged them to continue it at home and asked them to pray for all of us.

October is the month of the rosary, and I encourage you to take out your rosaries. Look at it, and appreciate the wonderful gift we have in the rosary. If you need to, you can go online and find a guide to show you how to pray it.

If you decide to pray it, can you please pray for the youth of our parish and those who are called to minister to them?

Thanks, Lupita
