Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ 1 June 7, 2015

THANKSGIVING The word "thanksgiving" most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord's Supper as "food we call 'thanksgiving' " (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self-congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The "thanksgiving" that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone. While the food of Christ's body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord's Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that

thanksgiving for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against the self-righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in remembrance of him. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Stephen Ministry

One of our goals as Stephen Ministers is to be “full of faith” while another is to “keep Jesus at the center of our lives.” Since we as God’s Church, throughout the world are celebrating The

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ this week, it is a very special event! In three of the Gospels; Matthew 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24, and Luke 22:14-20, Jesus takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and distributes it to the Apostles, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body.” Then he took a cup passed it to each Apostle telling them “Drink from it all of you for “this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sin.” In Luke 22; 14-20, Jesus refers to the first Passover, tying the Last Supper with the sacred Jewish feast, making the connection of himself with the sacrificial Passover lamb which was killed, shared, and eaten. St. Luke has Jesus repeating “This is my body and blood” and adding “do this in memory of me. In John 6: 48-51 Jesus declares himself “The Bread of Life” and explains “This is the bread that came down from heaven so one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I give is my flesh for the life of the world’” and in John 6:53-58 Jesus tells the crowd, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you don’t not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day. For my Flesh is True Food and my Blood is True Drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me… whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

We as Stephen Ministers are here for you. We are always available to discuss and help clarify problems or worries that concern you. If you have a need, please call CC at 797-2533 ext

Thank You The blood drive that was held in the Parish Center Sunday, May 24th 2015 was a great success!

Thank you to those who donated. Allen Hernandez from the Red Cross informed us that our parish gave 47 units of blood. Each unit could possibly be used to help 3 people. That means the blood that was donated has the potential to help 141 people! Thanks again to the Health Ministry for all of their work in making this blood drive a success.

Question of the Week Question for Children: Why do you like receiving Holy Communion? Question for Youth: What does it mean for you that the bread and wine becomes Jesus’ Body and Blood during the liturgy of the Eucharist? What feelings or ideas does it surface? Question for Adults: When you receive Holy Communion and hear the words” Body of Christ...Blood of Christ” what are some of the thoughts and feelings that you have?

GIRM 3 - Restore, Renew, Remember Three-Minute Liturgical Catechesis

Article 5: Come on in: the Water’s Fine Do you remember a time when you were hesitant to jump into a swimming pool or wade into the waves at the ocean? A friend or family member, already in the water, perhaps called out to you, “Come on in; the water's fine."

Sometimes we approach the liturgy a bit like that body of water. We know that jumping in is the only way to really enjoy it, but we're still hesitant to make the leap. Perhaps we are shy by nature and inclined to play the wallflower. Perhaps we don't really like to sing or don't think we have a very good singing voice. Perhaps we participate well most Sundays but just got up in a bad

mood this morning.

There can be a lot of different reasons we hesitate to jump in, but the only way to fully benefit from the liturgy is to enter into it with our whole selves. We are invited by Christ to share in his worship with every part of ourselves—mind and heart, body and soul, eyes and ears and voices. We need to worship the Lord with both our interior disposition and our external expression.

When the liturgy begins, we are all called to praise God together by joining in the opening song. This song often expresses the theme of the feast or season we are celebrating, helping us to enter into the mood of the celebration. Sometimes it may be more general, speaking simply of beginning our worship. In either case, it calls us to move beyond the limits of our own little world and become part of something much larger.

It is important to realize that the liturgy is a common action of all those gathered. It is not private prayer but communal prayer. The entrance song reminds us of this fact, because the song itself draws us into a communal act of praise. Each of us contributes his or her own voice to one musical sound. Our voices blend as one, because we each sing the same words on (at least roughly) the same note at the same time.

This is one of the main functions of music in the liturgy. It unites us in a common act of worship. It is a unifying element that recurs again and again throughout the liturgy, continually calling us to worship as one body in Christ.

Music also adds a sense of solemnity to our celebration, lifting it out of the ordinary and expressing our joy and our thanksgiving. Music can lift our minds and our spirits as we lift up our voices to the Lord.

All of this works, of course, only if we join in the singing. It takes all our voices together to give God the praise that God is due. It takes the cooperation of each person in the assembly if our music is to be as grand and glorious as it can be. If you think your voice isn't that great for singing, so what? God gave you that voice; give it back to God! Don't let any fear or hesitation keep you from joining in. Come on in; the water's fine

¡Entra! El agua está buena.

Catholic Daughters Dates to Remember

Mark your calendars for June 16th our final meeting for our

court year. This is also our formal reception of our new members.

Saturday July 11th will be our Patriotic Mass. Lunch will be

$15.00. Please bring your check to the June meeting.

All Catholic women 18 years and older are invited to our meeting and to join the CDA.

Welcome Ministry “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews

13:2) Jesus gave us clear guidelines in Luke 10:2 “The fields, He said, are ready, but the workers are few.”

St. Frances Cabrini Church is in need of volunteers who would form a “Welcome Ministry” that is dedicated to helping all parishioners and visitors by making them feel welcome and included in our communal celebration and to help them connect with our parish. We hope to promote a friendly environment where each member can grow in love and service to our savior Jesus Christ. The Welcome Committee’s mission is to make all new members of our parish feel that they have joined a welcoming faith community and to encourage current members to become active and involved in our parish. Members of the Welcome Ministry make an individual phone call to each newly registered individual/family, assemble “Welcome Packets for all, and meet with new parishioners to answer their questions and provide them with information about the many things St. Frances Cabrini parish has to offer them. You have been called and gifted by God; Come and make a difference. Involvement in ministry is a life of service for Jesus, like Jesus, and with Jesus. Will YOU answer Jesus’ call? Please contact Ursula at 909-797-2533 ext 225 or 909-797-0446 for additional information.

909-797-2533 ext. 225 or 909-797-0446

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound Jesus calls each of us to visit the sick:

“I was sick and you visited me” (Matthew 25:31-46.) Alienation is often at the heart of the experience of sickness or old age. We

feel cut off. We do not feel productive. We are unable to do the things we used to do. We cannot get out and go to church as we had been accustomed to do. If we are in a hospital, even more things are different: a different room, different clothing, a different bed, and different people around us than normally. Our life is disrupted. At the heart of our ministry to the sick is our effort to alleviate this feeling of isolation and alienation and to do all that we can to help the sick or homebound see and feel that they are a vital part of the parish community. We need many more ministers who answer the call to serve; WE NEED YOU. For additional information on this rewarding ministry, please contact Ursula at 909-797-0446 or leave a message at 909-797-2533 ext. 225.

Scrip is available on the first and third weekends of each month at the church after all masses.
