Pastoral Letter [The Pastoral Letter will be written by a different member of our pastoral staff each week. This letter will be reflective of the readings or Gospel for that Sunday and will be written through the lens of their ministry here at our Parish. We hope you will enjoy the perspectives of the wonderful staff we have here at St. Joseph’s.]

In these days it is very difficult to hope that better times will come because every day we witness painful situations. We see situations in the news such as: hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, wars be-tween countries and political disagreements between the government and the people which in most cases end up in riots. Others in which simply the avarice of the human being to obtain power impels them to cause harm to others. However, the readings of this Third Sunday of Advent encourage us not to lose hope and to maintain our faith and fidelity in God. Isaiah reminds us that God is not blind or deaf to the injustices commit-ted against those who are faithful to Him. On his part, John invites us not only to have faith, pray and give thanks but also to bear witness to God the Son, Jesus Christ. May, we as faithful disciples proclaim the love and fidelity of God to every person we encounter in our path. That they may see in us the JOY with which we await the coming of Our Savior Jesus Christ. As Spanish Faith Formation Coordinator I have the opportunity to bear witness of the greatness of God, to all the families enrolled in the elementary program or in Confirmation for Adults. Not because I lead a life of happiness and without sorrows, but because good things have always dimmed the bad. This is who Jesus is, light in the midst of darkness for everyone who wishes to open their heart to Him. So, I ask you to wait patiently and not with despair.

Liliana Durán-Pérez Spanish Faith Formation Coordinator

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK /OREMOS POR LOS ENFERMOS

REJOICE Isaiah proclaims truly good news to us! God’s coming brings not sadness, guilt, fear, wrath, or con-demnation. No, God’s coming is a source of comfort and joy. Saying it once is not enough, for today’s readings are full of joy. Mary’s Magnificat substitutes for our psalm today, and our second reading en-courages us to rejoice, to give thanks and praise. This is the root meaning of the Greek word for eu-charist. We are urged to rejoice and give thanks, because the coming of the Lord brings joy, healing, liberty, release, vindication. It makes the very earth spring up with new life! Good tidings! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS First Reading — As a garden makes its growth spring up, so will GOD make justice spring up before all the nations (Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11). Psalm — My soul rejoices in my God (Luke 1:46-50, 53-54). Second Reading — Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24). Gospel — I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord (John 1:6-8, 19-28). Q and A

Q. What is the role of the RCIA sponsor? A. The sponsor is a companion who walks with the candidate or catechumen through the catechu-menate process which can be a year, or more. Tra-ditionally the sponsor is seen as a “gift” of the parish, and selected with the individual needs of each candidate or catechumen in mind. A sponsor is someone with experience in the life of being Catholic. He or she should be faithful, questioning, charitable, and disciplined. Our parish NEEDS good sponsors!

Need more information? Want to become

more involved in RCIA? We need you! Contact Kathleen Li

at the parish office.

SIMBANG GABI

"Simbang Gabi" a Filipino

Christmas tradition. it is a series of nine (9) dawn Masses, beginning on December 16 and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December, which is the midnight Mass. This tradition was introduced by the Spanish friars to allow the farmers to hear Mass before going to the fields early in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de Gallo, or ``mass of the rooster.'' In the olden days, the Church bells started ringing as early as three o' clock waking people up so they were able to get ready for the four o'clock dawn Mass. Come and join us as we celebrate day-7 of the 9-day novena of Masses for Simbang Gabi. Date: Thursday, December 21, 2017 Time: 6:00 pm Choir 6:30 pm Mass Place: St. Joseph Church Reception will immediately follow and will be held in Halls A & B. For any question, kindly contact Evelyn Ruiz at 714-524-9006.

¡Buenas noticias!
