We have such a rich spiritual heritage in the Catholic Church! The variety of devotions and manners of prayer run the gamut from the silent contemplative prayer of the Carthusian monks to the very vocal and spirited prayer of the Charismatic Movement. And how many spiritual teachers we have, doctors of the church to guide and offer encouragement. One thing that runs common among all this tradition is the directive to begin our prayer always in humility and thanksgiving. Look at how Saint Paul begins just three of his letters: “I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 1 Cor 1: 4. I thank my God every time I remember you. Phil 1: 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people. Col 1: 3-4
When we begin any encounter with God in gratitude, we begin right in the middle of grace. I often find that when I remember to begin prayer in this way, my perspective and heart are so much more open to all that God wishes to give me. I see things I might not have seen if I began prayer in another way. I’m open to challenges I might not have ever considered.
Lately, as I begin my prayer with thanksgiving, my thoughts are filled with these last three years here at St. Lawrence. I have been so blessed to be a part of this community yet another time. It was here in 1983 that I first began to learn how to be a priest and how to serve others as Jesus does. When I think back on those days, I am thankful but also very humbled by all the mistakes I made and how much I had to learn. I’m still learning every day now, but I’m so grateful for lessons learned through Jesus and all of you who have taught me so much about faith, hope, and committed love.
What do you notice in your prayer especially when you begin with a time of thanksgiving for the One who loves you more than you can ever imagine? Isn’t it different for you as well? Doesn’t it make all the difference?
Thank you By Fr. Mike Muhr

ONEVOICE,MANYCULTURES
A year ago our Music Directors, Philip Jakob and Leo Tellado created a new Choir called ONE VOICE, MANY CULTURES. The choir has sung at those celebrations when as a parish we want to worship together in all our diversity.
The celebrations during the last year were for the Saint Lawrence Feast Day, Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil. We start the second year with the Saint Lawrence Feast Day coming in August. Though we expect to bring together members of our existing choirs, we also warmly welcome anyone who loves singing (or playing) their praise to God but who cannot make the regular weekly commitment to rehearsal expected in those choirs.
There will be just one rehearsal lasting two hours on Monday, August 6th at 7:00pm in the church. The following Sunday August 12th we will reconvene to support the singing at the 11:00am on Saint Lawrence Feast Day Mass.
Please let Philip know if you would like to attend so that he can provide music for you. Please e-mail [email protected]
or call 813.875 4040 - Ext. 205.

A Church Over a Hill By Fr. Bart Krzos
Let me tell you a story about St. Joseph Church, in
where I actually work as an assisting priest. In the 13-
th century a suburb was founded just a few steps to
the North from the old Sandomierz [sandomiesh] city
walls. It was located on the top of the hill called
“Thursday”. The name comes from the fruits and
vegetables market held there every Thursday for
many years past. The location was chosen by the
Franciscans friars as a good location to serve the
people with their testimony.
Although there was
seven other
churches in the
town, the citizens
started to love and
to respect those
poor friars. The
Franciscans friars
observed St.
Francis of Assisi’s
rules precisely.
They built a simple
and modest church
dedicated to
St. Joseph.
The only item in the church made of gold was a
tabernacle with a little sculpture of a bird
nourishing its offspring with its own blood – which
is a symbol of the Eucharist. The church’s pews,
altar and other furniture were made with bare
wood and all the altars: in the sanctuary and on
the sides were just pained on the walls. They
remain this way until today and they look so
realistic that they still put the tourists in awe.
The friars shared one dormitory wearing the same
simple and handmade tunic day and night. From
the feast of St. Francis to Easter they kept their
feet stitched in thick socks but any other time they
walked on their bare feet and they always were
supposed to here confessions in barefoot. Their
lives were full of work, fasting and prayer.
The Franciscan friars only allowed themselves a
happy celebration for one hour eight times a year.
The friars followed this harsh and simple life for six
centuries which faithful people admired and
respected so their church was never empty and
many people were buried there in the hope for
Franciscans’ prayers. Theresa Isabella Morstyn
[morshtin] – a daughter of a noble family; who we
do not know much about. We know she died at 18

years old and was buried in one of St. Joseph’s tombs.
Although she died in 1698 her body was preserved
and stays uncorrupted until today. She is lain in a
coffin covered with glass and may be seen by visitors
who are ready to climb down to the tomb under the
church’s floor.
At the end of the 18th century one Franciscan priest –
Fr. Adam Burzynski [bushynsky] volunteered for the
French Army led by Napoleon Bonaparte. Fr. Adam
was a chaplain and a nurse very dedicated to the
soldiers in need. Very quickly he became friends with a
soldier named Joseph Zajaczek [zayantsheck]. They
both traveled with Napoleon’s army all over Europe.
Finally, Fr. Adam arrived at Sandomierz and became a
superior at the Franciscan Monastery.
After Napoleon Bonaparte collapsed, Alexander I the
Tsar of Russia started to rule over the Polish Kingdom.
He kept pushing Pope Pius VII to change the borders
of Catholic dioceses in Poland and to adjust them to
new borders of the country. The Pope finally agreed
and made the changes.
In 1818 Sandomierz Diocese was established and then
General Joseph Zajaczek who was Tsar’s deputy in
Poland remembered his old Franciscan friend and Fr.
Adam Burzynski was appointed the first Bishop of
Sandomierz Diocese. Bishop Adam Burzynski turned
out to be a great pastor. He refused to move into the
bishop’s palace and lived in a simply house. He never
wore a purple cassock but vested in a black one with
simple wooden cross and continued to travel
barefooted and kept his Franciscan-style long beard.
Bishop Burzynski established a major seminary and a
house for retiring priests. He brought to the
Sandomierz Diocese religious sisters of St. Vincent the
De Paul to run a hospital and homeless shelter
and to take care of orphaned children left after
the numerous wars. The bishop wrote over 700
pastoral letters and preached homilies at many
churches to the people who loved to listen to
him. He died peacefully as a real pastor and
founding father of Sandomierz Diocese.
The Franciscan friars were banished from St.
Joseph Church in 1864 for their activity during
the independence. The church was left as a
funeral chapel. In 1934 a bishop established a
parish at St. Joseph and appointed Fr. Anthony
Rewera [revera] to be the pastor. He was a well
educated and devoted pastor. He founded a new
religious order: Sisters of St. Francis of the
Seraphim. Their goal was to go among the people
in need and organize every possible support. Fr.
Anthony was also a famous confessor, who
attracted many. The people would arrive early
in the morning and stand in long lines to go to
confession and get a consolation and advice for
their life.
Fr. Anthony was arrested in 1941 by the German
Nazis for refusing to reveal which parishioners
were involved in partisans. He was imprisoned in
a concentrations camp in Dachau and killed there
in 1942. Fr. Anthony Rewera was beatified by St.
John Paul II in 1992 as one of 108 Martyrs of
World War II. There are still some parishioners
who remember him as their pastor. Now we have
his statue in front of the church and his picture
over his old confession room which still is popular
as a spot for a good confession.
This is a real blessing that I can work in this
church that has such wonderful history.
