Francia, Inglaterra e Italia, las victorias militares de varios estados como Francia que lograron

asegurar las costas y la propia disminucin de incursiones escandinavas con la cristianizacin de

Escandinavia supusieron paulatinamente el final de su actividad tal y como se conoca.

El origen de la palabra es discutido. En textos rnicos se usa la forma fara vkingcomo "ir de

expedicin", aunque en textos posteriores como lassagas islandesasimplica saqueos o piratera y

ya excluye expediciones comerciales. El nombre vkingralude entre losescaldosa los marineros y

guerreros que participan en expediciones de ultramar.4Tambin se usa como nombre de persona

en algunas runas suecas. Hay pocas seales de que el trmino tuviera connotaciones negativas

antes de que terminara la era vikinga.

Algunas teoras han vinculado la palabra vikingo como variante de la regin geogrfica deViken,

bajo el significado "una persona de Viken". Segn el argumento, un vikingosimplemente describe a

una persona que procede de Viken, y que solo fue durante los ltimos siglos que la palabra identifica

a losescandinavosde laEdad Mediaen general.6

Eningls antiguo,la palabra wicingaparece en el poema delsiglo IXWidsith,as como en la historia

deAdn de Bremensobre 1070. Se usaba en la prctica como sinnimo de pirata. La palabra se

perdi y no se usa en textos posteriores, siendo vikingreintroducido en elRenacimiento

vikingodelRomanticismo,que los idealiz y dio pie a la extensin del adjetivo a religin vikinga,cultura vikinga entre otros. Enespaolse introdujo desde el ingls.

El nombre haca referencia a la actividad, no al origen tnico, siendo la extensin del trmino al

pueblo escandinavo, unametonimiamoderna. En textos escandinavos, incluso hoy en da, el

trmino se usa normalmente para especificar a los expedicionarios.7La cuestin de si eran o no una

cultura ha sido objetivo de diversos debates. Olaf Ragnusson, experto en el tema, as lo defiende en

su libro "Vikings: The Greatest Civilization.", en base a la sociedad agraria y con un gobierno que

tenan. Por ejemplo, el trmino se usa para las culturas germanas, excluyendo a los Sami,

originarios tambin de Escandinavia.

Este nombre fue, sin embargo, poco usado fuera de Escandinavia. Son frecuentes las

Las fuentes musulmanas hispanas se refieren a ellos como mayus(literalmente, magos, nombre

Las principalesfuentes primariassobre vikingos son los restos escandinavos y de las regiones

donde se asentaron.8La escritura mediante elalfabeto latinodata en Escandinavia de la adopcin

delCristianismo,con lo que no hay fuentes nativas previas al siglo XI y principios del XII .9Los

vikingos usaban inscripciones enrunas,con frecuencia cortas y difciles de entender. La historia

moderna basa ms sus conocimientos de los vikingos en los textos de comunidades cristianas ymusulmanas, frecuentemente con un sesgo negativo por haber sufrido la actividad vikinga. Los

documentos varan en su parcialidad y fiabilidad entre s, pero no ms de lo normal en textos

altomedievales, siguen siendo relevantes. Desde mediados del siglo XX, las fuentes arqueolgicas

han ayudado a construir una imagen ms completa y neutral.10El registro arqueolgico es

particularmente rico y variado, y proporciona conocimiento de asentamientos tanto rurales como

urbanos, de la industria y actividad econmica adems de la navegacin y actividades blicas sin

Pertenecan tnicamente a la familia de lospueblos germanosy su lengua y cultura eran

germnicas derivadas de religiones animistas, como las de todos los pueblosescandinavos.Los

primeros monjes cristianos germanos asociaron a este pueblo con el nieto de No e hijo mayor de

Jafet llamadoGmer(y su pueblo, loscimerios). Esta comunidad lingstica y cultural de toda el

rea escandinava ha de tenerse en cuenta a la hora de profundizar en el conocimiento del espritu

que llevaban estos pueblos.

Estos pueblos, al igual que losgriegos,habitaban una geografa muy segmentada que junto al

clima y los animales carnvoroshaca muy difcil la comunicacin por tierra, lo que les oblig a

navegar. El mar se convertira en su principal medio de comunicacin.

Los contactos entre los pases nrdicos y el resto deEuropavenan de hace tiempo. Loshrulos,

por ejemplo, fueron unos claros predecesores de los futuros vikingos, ya que tambin procedan de

Escandinavia y efectuaron algunas expediciones de saqueo a lo largo de las costa atlntica de

Europa a bordo de embarcaciones. Los hallazgos arqueolgicos muestran que el comercio y la

influencia datan de varios milenios a. C. No obstante, los pases escandinavos constituan un remoto

rincn de poca importancia poltica y econmica para el resto de Europa.

En sus inicios, los daneses tenan una organizacin militar muy fuerte, realizaron incursiones

rpidas, cuyo nico fin era el pillaje y obtener un botn. Era tambin el pueblo ms numeroso de los

tres. Habitaban principalmente enJutlandia,EscaniaySelandia,aparte de las islas que separan

almar Blticodelmar del Norteentre ambas pennsulas. Esto les daba una gran ventaja estratgica

que les permita dominar las rutas de comercio, al igual queConstantinopla.EnDinamarcase han

hallado restos de fortificaciones, de fines del perodo de apogeo vikingo, donde poda concentrarse

gran nmero de tropas. Las fortificaciones, conocidas comotrelleborgs,tienen forma circular y estn

divididas en cuatro cuadrantes, con edificios en cuadro en cada uno de ellos. Los recintos

fortificados estn concebidos con una precisin que atestigua gran sentido del sistema y del orden

por parte de los caudillos, y tambin que, en el squito del rey dans, haba gente con profundos

conocimientos degeometra.Un ejemplo de este tipo de asentamientos es la antiguaHedeby.

Es un misterio por qu estos pueblos nrdicos se lanzaron a la expansin, en busca de tierras que

conquistar o colonizar a partir del siglo VIII.

Una teora bastante comn sugiere que Escandinavia podra haber sufrido una etapa

desuperpoblacin.La generalizacin de unaagriculturamucho ms eficiente en los tiemposprecedentes habra permitido a la poblacin dispararse, con la consiguiente presin demogrfica por

nuevas tierras. Esto, en un pueblo costero con una avanzada navegacin, supondra una era de

expansin a travs de los mares. Aunque casi todas las explicaciones toman como base esta teora,

pues se hace difcil imaginar una extensin semejante sin una presin por nuevas tierras,

generalmente se la considera como parte de una explicacin mayor. La principal objecin a esta

teora es la falta de pruebas de tal aumento demogrfico y la falta de argumentos para las

incursiones y saqueos. Adems, las tierras nrdicas, aunque duras, disponan y disponen de

amplias zonas sin habitar que no parecen haber sido ocupadas.

Se considera tambin que el declive de las antiguas rutas comerciales puede haber sido un factor

decisivo. Desde la cada delImperio romanoen476,los intercambios comerciales en Europa no

hicieron ms que disminuir, y la unidad poltica y de mercado se rompi. As, los vikingos tuvieron

una gran ocasin como comerciantes: cambiaban las pieles yesclavosde su tierra

porplatayespeciasrabes, que usaban para comerciar y comprar armas a losfrancos,ocupando

un puesto vaco de intermediarios.

Otra argumentacin bastante usada es que los vikingos se aprovecharon de la debilidad de las

regiones que atacaban y ocupaban. As, la poca de grandes ataques coincide con la fracturadelImperio carolingioy ladivisin britnica.Otro factor importante fue la destruccin del poder

navalfrisiopor los francos, que dej a los vikingos sin rivales en el Atlntico Occidental, dndoles la

oportunidad de ocupar su antigua zona de influencia.

A este hecho se suma tambin el avance en las mejoras tcnicas navales de los vikingos. Por

ejemplo, sus embarcaciones tenan pococalado,lo cual les permita navegar por ros poco

profundos, adentrndose tierra adentro por vas fluviales. Construyeron barcos de unos 20-25

metros deeslorapor 3-6 metros demanga,con una capacidad de entre 40 y 100 personas, pero

siempre manteniendo una maniobrabilidad y ligereza que les daba ventaja en cualquier situacin.Desarrollaron adems la orientacin astronmica.

Otra de las causas parece responder a un factor poltico. Segn se cree, en los aos precedentes a

la expansin, en Escandinavia se sucedieron una serie movimientos de unificacin. Las tribus o

grupos que quedaban fuera de estos movimientos deban buscar nuevas zonas de asentamiento.

Sus ataques y su aparicin en la escena poltica europea comenzaron con el saqueo

delmonasteriodeLindisfarneen793.Los monasterios, que acumulaban amplias posesiones,

alimentos y cobijo, son objetivo de sus siguientes ataques, que se producen con gran facilidad y

rapidez (al fin y al cabo, los monjes no podan defenderse). En794,son saqueados el monasterio de

la isla escocesa deIona,los monasterios de Jarrow y Monkwearmouth en la costa inglesa y el

monasterio de Inishboffin en Irlanda. Dichos ataques se repetiran en los aos siguientes, azotando

la zona. No obstante, hay que tener en cuenta que la mayora de fuentes de esa poca fueron

redactadas por los pueblos atacados, por lo que es posible que muchos de los datos estn

exagerados. De hecho, los ataques fueron vistos en muchos casos como herejaspor los monjes de

los monasterios, ya que suponan un ataque directo a Dios.

En799,los vikingos se empiezan a aventurar lejos de esa zona y arriban por primera vez a la costa

francesa en Bretaa. El estuario delLoiray las islas de la regin fueron vctimas de las razias

vikingas. En el820,ya una flota de 13 navos ataca por el Sena.En834se tienen noticias de sus

primeros ataques a los Pases Bajos.

En las Islas Britnicas y elCanal de la Mancha,el paso del tiempo slo increment el nmero de

En878,el rey deWessexAlfredo I el Grandevenga los mltiples saqueos de Inglaterra y logra

derrotar a un ejrcito dans, garantizando la independencia de su tierra, aunque tiene que reconocerel dominio de stos sobre la otra mitad de Inglaterra. La guerra no tardara en reanudarse, pero

desde entonces los vikingos llevan la peor parte. En885su ataque ms afamado aParsslo se

evita con el pago de unrescatey el permiso para saquear las tierras durante su camino de vuelta.

Pero en888,Alain de Bretaalogra derrotarlos tambin. El comienzo del siglo X en Europa

Occidental marca el fin de sus grandes xitos. En911,se rechaza el ltimo ataque a la

desembocadura del Sena, y en931son expulsados de sus bases en el Loira. La dcada siguiente

ve sus ltimos ataques aBretaa.

En Oriente su esplendor durara ms, y a lo largo del siglo X, varias expediciones tienen xito en susataques por elMar Negroy elCaspio.Los comienzos del siglo XI veran un ltimo reaparecer

cuando en1014se reinstaura el dominio vikingo de Inglaterra y con el vikingo Canuto.Este renacer

se considera definitivamente terminado cuando el reyHarald III el Despiadadomuere en labatalla

del puente Stamforden1066,durante conflictos dinsticos en Inglaterra.

La Era Vikinga estaba ya tocando a su fin. En1100Sueciase convierte al cristianismo, mostrando

as como Escandinavia se iba integrando en la cultura europea cristiana. Fuera de sus pases de

origen, la mayora de sus asentamientos haban terminado mezclndose con la poblacin local y

De acuerdo con las crnicas anglosajonas, tras el ataque a Lindisfarne en 793, los vikingos

continuaron con sus incursiones espordicas sobre la costa inglesa. Ese mismo ao los vikingos

saquearon un monasterio que custodiaba las reliquias de San Cuthbert. Marc el principio de un

violento perodo de saqueos, ataques y devastaciones que, con el tiempo, se fueron haciendo ms

violentos y organizados. As, los noruegos atacaron durante el invierno entre840y841,en vez de

durante el verano como solan, recalando en una isla frente a Irlanda. En el 850, llegaron a invernar

en suelo ingls.

Los vikingos llevaron a cabo numerosas expediciones sobreIrlanda.Se asentaron en algunos

puntos, fundando ciudades comoDubln.Aunque en algunos momentos parecieron estar a punto de

controlar la isla, acabaron mezclndose con los irlandeses. La literatura, el arte y la arquitectura

reflejan esta profunda influencia escandinava. A travs de las rutas comerciales y vikingas, entraron

adems en contacto con Oriente.

Desde795,los monasterios de la costa este de Irlanda sufrieron numerosos ataques, pronto

extendidos al resto de la costa, especialmente en el norte y este. En los primeros 40 aos, se trat

generalmente de pequeos grupos no organizados. A partir de830empezaron a actuar flotas

considerables y coordinadas, establecindose los primeros asentamientos en las costas, entre los

que destaca Dubln. Esos asentamientos vikingos fueron aceptados por los nativos, producindose

en muchos casos un mestizaje.

A los vikingos que llegaban a las islas desde Noruega se les llamaba los de Lochlannde lasoscuras navesy en el manuscrito irlands de San Gallo se cita:

Colrica esta noche ruge la tempestad. La blanca cabellera de las aguas revuelve. En las

aguas de Irlanda ya no son de temer esta noche las velas de los fieros guerreros de

Lochlann.11

En832,una flota vikinga de 120 barcos invadi los reinos de las costas norte y este, hecho

atribuido a los deseos de controlar los rentables ataques a Irlanda. Durante la dcada de 830 se

comenz a profundizar hacia el interior, en contraposicin a los ataques ms superficiales y

desorganizados que se haban estado llevando a cabo sobre las costas. Ya en 840, los vikingos

disponan de varias bases tierra adentro. Para protegerse de los daneses, los jefes locales se

alan en esa poca con los noruegos, que desde 853 pasan a controlar Irlanda.

En 838, una pequea flota remont el roLiffeyen el este, donde fundaron un campamento

(longphortpara los nativos), que constituira los cimientos de la futura ciudad de Dubln. Otros

longphorts fueronCork,Limerick,WaterfordyWexford.

Uno de los ltimos grandes combates con presencia vikinga fue labatalla de Clontarfen 1014,

muchas veces mitificada, en la que los vikingos lucharon tanto en el bando del reyBrian

Borucomo en el de sus enemigos.

La mitad occidental delImperio carolingiosufri a lo largo del siglo IX, y tras la ruptura del

mismo, numerosos ataques vikingos, que asolaron las costas. Los primeros ataques se

concentraron en la zona delCanal de La Mancha,junto con las islas britnicas una de las zonas

ms castigadas por los vikingos. El mismoCarlomagnotuvo que armar una flota para tratar,

infructuosamente, de proteger sus costas. La ribera del Loira,que solan remontar, tambin
