Introducing KoduKodu is a simple visual programming language made

specifically for creating games.

Kodu uses icons (pictures) that are

added together like building

blocks to form instructions.

Game environments

are constructed by the user in a 3D scene editor.

As well as on a PC, Kodu is also available via the

Xbox 360.

Introducing KoduWhen first opening the Kodu Game Lab, these are the menu

options you will see.

Code InvestigatorsTo get to know Kodu and what can be achieved, try out the

software and test some of the existing games that have been made in the Kodu Game Lab.

Select ‘Load World’ and then ‘Lessons’.

You now have the role of being a code investigator - you must choose one (or more) game(s) to test out.

Afterwards, be ready to feedback anything that you have discovered about what Kodu can do and how

it might work.

Was it fun/interesting?What else could it be programmed to do?

How could the ideas be adapted?

Basic Tools and Menu

If you want to return to the home menu, click the Home button on the toolbar. This is where you can load a different world if

you choose.

After loading a world, there may be instructions that can help to guide you through a tutorial. If so, read them and

explore the options.

There are also menu options down the left hand side and the toolbox at the bottom.

The <Esc>key on the keyboard toggles

between play and edit modes.

Investigate!

Object Tool: Add or Edit Characters and Objects

How could the ideas be adapted?

Try opening the software and investigating. Work in

pairs so you can collaborate and discuss

with a partner. Don’t worry if things seem

unfamiliar at first. We will learn more about Kodu

over the next few lessons. To see what the code looks like, use the Object tool then right-click on any character in a game. Select Program to

view and edit the code.

What can you find out that Kodu can do?

What else could it be programmed to do?

You’re the Teacher

Swap around for your partner to teach you something in return.

Exchange ideas and knowledge with a friend or partner who you have not been working with.

Can you teach them how to do something that you have learned in Kodu today?

Remember to explain instructions carefully and offer praise and encouragement.
