Experiences during the Ebola outbreak

• Denial of the existence of Ebola Virus led to many deaths• Division of Families and Breakdown of Cultural practices• Wrong MOH Ebola Messages/Media messages: “Ebola Has No

cure”• Negative Communities Approach: Ostracism, Death Threats,

Humiliation by community members• Deployment of many INGOs & NGOs bringing fear in the family• Lack of basic facilities in quarantine zones: food, water and

medical supplies• Strike actions of health workers working in the ETUs

Clinical Care provided in the Ebola Treatment Unit

• Clinical care in the ETU was by trial - there is no established treatment for Ebola patients

• Medications included Antibiotics, Flagyl, multivitamin, PSM, ASA and Drip)

• Medications were administered 3 times a day:• Morning (5:00 AM)• Afternoon (1:00 PM)• Evening (8:00 PM)

• Food was served 3 times a day. Healthcare workers – some were kind, respectful and rude.

Lessons learned to overcomeFear, rumors, and Stigma in the Community

• Having the confidence that you are negative of the Ebola Virus, after leaving the Ebola Treatment Unit

• Return to normal Community activities and provide necessary Education to people

• Provide answers to all questions relating to being an Ebola survivor

• Change of Environment

The role of Research during the Ebola Outbreak

• Research was essential because there were no approved medications to prevent or treat EVD

• Liberians were not familiar with clinical research, so the initial response was fear and rejection of the research

• Education about the research at all levels through social mobilization and community engagement helped to allay fears and establish trust

• Through research efforts, we are able to learn what works and what doesn’t work

• The lessons learned from clinical research can help to prevent or reduce the impact of future outbreaks

How Research should be done during a future outbreak

• There must be more awareness before research commences• Researchers should use Psychosocial Counseling as a key pillar,

as to erase participants perceptions• Research should be conducted with Economic Recovery

program for prospective participants• There must be solutions to problems found in a participant

during a Research (Intervention).• More Capacity building for Research Workers narrowing it to

the environments and cultural practices of said Country where the research is been done

• The research Site should be integrated into the normal Health System to avoid stigma on participants

How can Research best address survivors concerns

• It provides clinical guidance for treatment of Ebola Survivors• It helps doctor to manage survivor’s patients• As the quest for adequate Health system, major Health facilities

to provide total survivors examination are not accessible, so Research especially been decentralize will provide hope for survivors clinical care, with good Laboratory system.

• It reduces the number of death in the survivors community, because it is providing systematic health analysis on survivors.

• It reduces the issues of public and private Health facilities stigmatizing Ebola Survivors.

• It also provide advocacy role in term of other socio-economic needs for survivors, during research site data collection especially biography of Ebola Survivors help NGOs and INGOs to make supportive decision to help survivors recover.
